Aircraft carrier Hiryū
As mentioned in the previous chapter, Hiryū was the second aircraft carrier included in “The Second Naval Armaments Supplement Program” of 1934. Originally both carriers were supposed to be sister vessels, but the number of design modifications introduced during the construction of Sōryū resulted in many differences between the two. According to the original plans Hiryū was to be completed a year after Sōryū, but her construction (similarly to her predecessor) suffered delays caused by two key factors. The first one was the implementation of the lessons learned during the reconstruction of Kaga, which was going on simultaneously with Hiryū’s construction. Then there was new data available from the early service days of Sōryū, which exposed some of the design’s drawbacks and weaknesses. The number of issues popping up “along the way” was further increased by the Fourth Fleet Incident and by Japan’s withdrawal from the previously signed naval treaties. Considering all those issues, it is not hard to imagine the inevitable impact they had on Hiryū’s original design and construction schedule. The greatest source of delays was undoubtedly the aftermath of the Fourth Fleet Incident, which forced the Navy Aviation Bureau to introduce changes in the design of the second carrier. After the new requirements had been implemented, Hiryū’s final design (known as the “Basic Project G-10”) finally emerged.

4 stars for the information and the photos, but there are some annoyances and irritations.

A very good book on these two ships. Chapter I on Initial Concept and Design Changes contains information I had never read before. There is a separate chapter on the design of the Hiryu describing the changes to the design and construction as a result of the Fourth Fleet Incident of July 1935. The book is a translation from the original Polish and there are several annoyances. There are quite a few English misspellings and grammatical oddities. For example, Rangun is the capital of Birma. In a couple of sentences it appears that the Polish word for "hull" got translated as "fuselage." Another annoyance is that a couple of photo or drawing captions don't really match the photos. For example, on page 17, the label for the drawing reads "Cross section ... showing the thickness of armor plating." There is no text in the drawing -- the deck levels are not called out and no armor thicknesses are indicated. These things are a bit irritating but the information in the book is still excellent.

Highly Recommended.

Excellent book about this pair of IJN aircraft carriers. Well written, good selection of photos. Development and operational histories are covered. It includes color depictions of Japanese aircraft and their USN opponents that are very well done. Would have liked to see Hiryu and Soryu depicted in color as well, particularly some of the flight deck schemes, but that's a minor quibble. Would recommend, my purchase of this volume led to my buying another of his books on the IJN carrier KAGA.

Not as good as his book on the Kaga but well written ...

Not as good as his book on the Kaga but well written from there nicely translated with some goofs. Well researched and extremely informative. Would be nice to see more books of this kind on the other ships of Pearl Harbor such as Akagi, Shokaku and Zuikaku as well as the Mogami heavy cruisers.

Never Seen Anything Like This Before

Finally someone scours existing literature, gets permission to reprint some similar articles, and publishes them all in a book. Imagine the hours and hours spent entering search phrases. And here is the result of all that work. Zounds consort!
Isolate your noisy stuff from your quiet stuff with whatever trenches or diffusions you can find in the crummy ... process you are stuck using, work on your various rejection ratios, pray for luck, hope your stock options become worth something someday, and spend the price of this book on beer and doughnuts.

Wow - so interesting - compelling reading

Wow guys - amazing stuff here. I work as a Rail Inspection Officer here in the US and was looking for a book on SIGNAL INTEGRITY but i bought this by mistake. It so happens I also have a passing interest in CAD engineering and instead of returning this book i decided to read it and found it so amazing! Now i dont even touch my DVD collection or waste time playing baseball at the beach.
I recommend this book to Rail Inspection Employees and everyone else too!

Suddenly I did not feel alone any more ...

As an artist I have seen the beginning of this problem in the art world since the end of the eighties - so much that I left my international position as an artist and moved to Egypt after a large art project under patronage of UNESCOs HQ in Paris. Finally someone who have followed the situation since that time and openly state his concern for the situation for curationism in the art world. For those concerned about contemporary art, this book is a must.

This is a terrific look at contemporary issues within the field. Perhaps I loved it because it reinforces and validates my opinions nevertheless it is a well researched book and traces the history of curating. I highly recommend it!

Even when the writing moves into the minds of immoral characters, McCarthy draws attention to the characters' humanity, forcing the perceptive reader to identify with even the most despicable representatives of the human race. Cooper shows that this rare yet powerful recognition of commonality and the internal yearnings for community and a commitment to justice or compassion undeniably exist in McCarthy's work.

Absolutely superb - Five Stars!

Exceeds expectations exponentially. The author is brilliant, at least in her analysis of Cormac McCarthy. I've read a dozen books concerning Cormac McCarthy's writing, and I've read each of McCarthy's books, some of them twice. After reading Lydia R. Cooper I went back and reread some of McCarthy's books again. She has the best, most closely reasoned analysis of McCarthy's books I've ever read. I was often surprised in reading her and was obliged to reevaluate many aspects of McCarthy's work. She deserves five stars, and she deserves to be read by anyone who takes McCarthy seriously. I believe that he is one of the top writers in the world today, and Lydia R. Cooper is certainly his best critic.

Great Read

The organization is a little bad and some of it is redundant (having been taking from an online blog), but the basic message of the book is why I gave it a 5 stars.

I grew up in a southern family where college football was god, but after attending college myself and seeing first hand and attending a few classes with the "special admin" football squad and basketball squads I soon realized that there presence on a college campus was an insult to me and my hard work to get to this place. Is a college an institution of higher learning or it is a training facility for professional sports? I'd recommend this to anyone interested in Human Bio-Diversity, collegiate sports, or the decline of the south and traditional American culture. Paul does do a good job of addressing these divergent themes and weaving them together.

This book has convinced me that the NCAA needs to reform its ways (disband it?) before you ever see me taking time out of my life to watch these people compete. Sorry BCS and March Madness but I'm not mad about your BS!

EYE OPENER

I was a typical flower child of the 60's with the l "Iove everybody and everybody loves me attitude " until I went to college and had a wake up call.
The foot ballplayers were treated as celebrities and given special "dispensation" because they had good hands and fast feet.
I struggled through 4 years of tough academics (plus working after class) before I finally received my B.A.
Initially I admired and respected the athletes for being able to balance football practice, ball games and maintaining passing marks until I found out the truth. With one or two exceptions the "jocks" rarely came to class yet miraculously managed to keep their grades up. I soon found out the truth. It's called a DOUBLE STANDARD. If you were a star player you graduated. Period.
One time our professor had us swap test papers and score them. I got the paper from the student next to me who was an outstanding football player but could only spell his own name correctly. A 20 year old college freshman whose test paper looked like it was written by a second grader. I discovered this guy could not spell, and had no clue about simple grammar or punctuation. But he could sure play ball. His major, physical education, surprise surprise!!
This was the first time I realized that the American educational system was in big trouble. Mr.Kersey does a much better job than me describing this phenomena. Several years ago I read the book OUT OF BOUNDS about this same subject but not as good as this book.
I had a tough time in college but I earned every A I made the hard way, by studying my butt off.
Just listen to the half-time interviews with the ball players and you can understand why this country's educational system is a failure.
I've been to Europe a number of times and it is amazing that the students over there speak several different languages.
It is embarrassing that a 16 year old German student speaks better and proper English better than our own school kids do.

Another solid reason to boycott the American "Higher Education" establishment.

The book title is an assessment of the tailgate party crowd. The book contents explain why. One of the reasons college costs have become ruinous to most American students is that they are supporting a huge parasitical obscenity - the collegiate sports program.
