He is an Internist who trained at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York in Internal Medicine. Following his Chief Residency there, he moved to Hanover, New Hampshire where he was a member of Dartmouth Medical School and the Hitchcock Clinic for many years.



He has had a long interest in international health working in Haiti and Pakistan and in medical anthropology, history, the social sciences and literature particularly of Latin America. Along with his wife Diana Taylor, who is a University Professor at New York University, Eric travels extensively in Latin America and Mexico. He has two children and one grandchild, who was born at Bellevue.

An Honest, Sober Look At Fascinating Patient Stories

"Twelve Patients" is an engrossing book written by the former medical director of Bellevue Hospital, one of the most famous (and oldest) public hospitals in the country. Manheimer details the lives of several of his most interesting patients, in often lurid and terrifying detail. He pulls no punches in his descriptions of these patients, and doesn't flinch in his portrayal of the often depressing social situations involved. Many of these patients have tragic background stories that have lead them through the doors at Bellevue, sometimes their only refuge from horrific circumstances. Through these stories, Manheimer also tackles the subjects of hospital politics and our country's broken healthcare system.

As a physician I found his book fascinating and truthful. Those of us in the medical field all have our own stories of patients who've left their marks on us, some good and some bad. Manheimer's great strength is that he doesn't try to sugarcoat the stories or his feelings about his patients. One patient was described as "evil." How often have you read a book by a physician that described a patient this way?

Medical memoirs appear to be in a renaissance. Manheimer's book joins several recent physician memoirs that I've really enjoyed. The most recent one, God's Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine is a fine read that really gets to the heart and soul of medicine. It's touching and thought-provoking.

Confessions of a Surgeon: The Good, the Bad, and the Complicated...Life Behind the O.R. Doors is a controversial book where a surgeon reveals his true feelings about his field, good and bad. After reading this book, you may not like the doctor, but you'll see his point of view. I highly recommend all these books for anyone interested in medical memoirs.

I couldn't wait to read Twelve Patients. The jacket summary depicted a well rounded read with the luxury of a glimpse behind the scenes through Dr. Manheimer's experience during his tenure as director.

The patients profiled came from various walks of life and varying background and circumstances. The book also touched upon issues plaguing the medical community as well as social questions on these issues. Addressing the hot topics from the eyes of a professional medical practicer is enlightening especially when the stories cited are non-fictional. You see first hand how the pressing issues effect people as a whole as well as the medical community.

I felt Dr. Manheimer's interest and compassion for all of his patients was genuine and sincere. He definitely provided the respect and dignity to all that entered Bellevue. His going the extra mile was appreciated by patients as well as his reading audience. Dr. Manheimer gave me hope that there are doctors that care and are willing to do more than write a prescription and call it a day.

I appreciated how Dr. Manheimer shared his own very personal health challenge. His challenge resulted in understanding patients experiencing similar challenges at a whole new level. He was both practitioner and patient which allows much more compassion and understanding towards others.

I found Twelve Patients to be informative and entertaining. Dr. Manheimer is inspiring on many levels, an example of how all physicians should be and how they should treat those they encounter in their profession/speciality.

I highly recommend Twelve Patients to be added to your reading list, it won't disappoint

Dr. Eric Manheimer's book "Twelve Patients:Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital is an amazing and very realistic view inside the most amazing health care system in the world. Bellevue Hospital is the flagship hospital of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation covering at least 11 major medical centers in the NYC metropolitan area. I had the privilege of working for Dr. Manheimer as Director of Obstetrics at Bellevue Hospital. Reading this book took me back to some of the most exciting, stimulating and challenging years of my career. It was an amazing experience working under Dr. Manheimer's tutelage as our Medical Director. His open door policy, genuine concern for his physicians and mostly his patients is palpable in this book. Eric (as he preferred us to call him) has medicine in his genes---his father practiced internal medicine, even making house calls into his late 80s. Eric often accompanied him on house calls as a child. As you will in this book, this is where he became "imprinted" with the "art of medicine." It is really uplifting to see a Medical Director of a huge system operate with true "esprit de corps" taking care of his patients and his faculty. You will get to discover and appreciate the complete transcection of society (national and international) that receives health care at Bellevue Hospital. You will see the inside mechanics of the oldest hospital in the US and one of the largest teaching hospitals today.
I bought this book and took it on a weekend get-away with my family----what a mistake!!!!!! I had to fight my family off from taking this book from me----they too were wholly engrossed in the contents having "lived" Bellevue through me during my tenure there. Subsequently we have bought many more copies. As some who reads 2-3 novels a week, I give this book a 10/10!

A book every beginning psionic should use

Having pored over many different forums and websites all over the internet, I've become quite acquainted with the myriads of techniques one would use if they wish to train in Psionics. However, for one reason or another, much of the information was either incomplete, biased, explained improperly, or just plain wrong. In this training manual I found concise instructions laid out in convenient sections based on training/skill level. The author offers constructive training programs and suggestions within the book, but encourages individualistic tweaking as learning Psionics is very different for each person. The information provided is kept at a perspective that appeals to many minds without cluttering up the process, you are simply given the information you need to begin your work.

I personally have gained results from this training manual within the first 3 weeks, and though it has been difficult at some points, the information herein worked for me. And I hope that it works for you as well.

This is NON-FICTION. (Not a game manual.)

This isn't a video game guide, nor a tabletop RPG resource.
This is *actual* energy-working, done in a non-religion format.
It's a really good guide for those that might want to look into why sometimes they feel strong emotions out of nowhere, why some areas have a different tactile feeling (such as unexplained warmth, cold, or tingling), and how to get some basic protections set up to help stabilize their mood, if it's being unduly influenced by more metaphysical sources.
It does a great job starting off with the very basics, and some simple exercises that help introduce someone into the field without trying to rush the person into things they're not ready for, helping prevent them from messing themselves up by over-reaching too soon.
Five stars. Easily.

Great book! Exactly what it promises.

This book is divided in two main parts. The first, introductory section, explaining empirical observations, hypotheses and theories regarding psi and some psi-related aspects of reality. The second offers a detailed, progressive training plan for developing foundational psi skills. Both parts are short and to the point. No hyperbole, no trappings or fluffiness, only concise quality information. The first part alone would make the book worth it, and the second part compounds on that many times over, being the practical guide. The whole book has a clear language and is easy to understand. The exercises are well designed in the sense that they are easy to try but not remotely easy to master, requiring dedication, build upon previous ones, and do produce results if the time and effort is put in. This is a skillset, so in general it means weeks and months to improve significantly, not a couple days. There are plenty of exercises that can be done with a partner, usually as an option. Overall, to put it in one sentence, the book is exactly the beginning training manual it names itself as.

About the Author

CHRISTIE JOHN GEANKOPLIS is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. His current research interests involve transport processes, biochemical reactor engineering, mass transfer in liquid solutions, and diffusion and/or reaction in porous solids. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

The title of this text has been changed from Transport Processes and Unit Operations to Transport Processes and Separation Process Principles (Includes Unit Operations). This was done because the term "unit operations" has been largely superseded by the term "separation processes," which better reflects the modern nomenclature being used.

In this fourth edition, the main objectives and the format of the third edition remain the same. The sections on momentum transfer have been greatly expanded, especially the sections on fluidized beds, flow meters, mixing, and non-Newtonian fluids. Material has been added to the chapters on mass transfer. The chapters on absorption, distillation, and liquid-liquid extraction have also been enlarged. More new material has been added to the sections on ion exchange and crystallization. The chapter on membrane separation processes has been greatly expanded, especially for gas-membrane theory.

The field of chemical engineering involved with physical and physical-chemical changes of inorganic and organic materials and, to some extent, biological materials is overlapping more and more with the other process-engineering fields of ceramic engineering, process metallurgy, agricultural food engineering, wastewater-treatment (civil) engineering, and bioengineering. The principles of momentum, heat, and mass transport and the separation processes are widely used in these processing fields.

The principles of momentum transfer and heat transfer have been taught to all engineers. The study of mass transfer has been limited primarily to chemical engineers. However, engineers in other fields have become more interested in mass transfer in gases, liquids, and solids.

Since chemical and other engineering students must study so many topics today, a more unified introduction to the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass transfer and to the applications of separation processes is provided. In this text the principles of the transport processes are covered first, and then the separation processes (unit operations). To accomplish this, the text is divided into two main parts.

PART 1: Transport Processes: Momentum, Heat, and Mass

This part, dealing with fundamental principles, includes the following chapters: 1. Introduction to Engineering Principles and Units; 2. Principles of Momentum Transfer and Overall Balances; 3. Principles of Momentum Transfer and Applications; 4. Principles of Steady-State Heat Transfer; 5. Principles of Unsteady-State Heat Transfer; 6. Principles of Mass Transfer; and 7. Principles of Unsteady-State and Convective Mass Transfer.

PART 2: Separation Process Principles (Includes Unit Operations)

This part, dealing with applications, covers the following separation processes: 8. Evaporation; 9. Drying of Process Materials; 10. Stage and Continuous Gas-Liquid Separation

Processes (humidification, absorption); 11. Vapor-Liquid Separation Processes (distillation); 12. Liquid-Liquid and Fluid-Solid Separation Processes (adsorption, ion exchange, extraction, leaching, crystallization); 13. Membrane Separation Processes (dialysis, gas separation, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, microfiltration); 14. Mechanical-Physical Separation Processes (filtration, settling, centrifugal separation, mechanical size reduction).

In Chapter 1 elementary principles of mathematical and graphical methods, laws of chemistry and physics, material balances, and heat balances are reviewed. Many readers, especially chemical engineers, may be familiar with most of these principles and may omit all or parts of this chapter.

A few topics, primarily those concerned with the processing of biological materials, may be omitted at the discretion of the reader or instructor; these include Sections 5.5, 6.4, 8.7, 9.11, and 9.12. Over 240 example or sample problems and over 550 homework problems on all topics are included in the text. Some of the homework problems involve biological systems, for those readers who are especially interested in that area.

This text may be used for a course of study following any of the following five suggested plans. In all plans, Chapter 1 may or may not be included.

1. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass and separation processes. In this plan, most of the entire text, covering the principles of the transport processes in Part 1 and the separation processes in Part 2, is covered. This plan would be applicable primarily to chemical engineering as well as to other process-engineering fields in a one-and-one-half-year course of study at the junior and/or senior level.

2. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass and selected separation processes. Only the elementary sections of Part 1 (the principles chapters—2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7) are covered, plus selected separation-processes topics in Part 2 applicable to a particular field, in a two-semester or three-quarter course. Students in environmental engineering, food process engineering, and process metallurgy could follow this plan.

3. Study of transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass. The purpose of this plan in a two-quarter or two-semester course is to obtain a basic understanding of the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass transfer. This involves studying sections of the principles chapters—2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 in Part 1—and omitting Part 2, the applied chapters on separation processes.

4. Study of separations processes. If the reader has had courses in the transport processes of momentum, heat, and mass, Chapters 2-7 can be omitted and only the separation processes chapters in Part 2 studied in a one-semester or two-quarter course. This plan could be used by chemical and certain other engineers.

5. Study of mass transfer. For those such as chemical or mechanical engineers who have had momentum and heat transfer, or those who desire only a background in mass transfer in a one-quarter or one-semester course, Chapters 6, 7, and 10 would be covered. Chapters 9, 11, 12, and 13 might be covered optionally, depending on the needs of the reader.

Different schools and instructors differ on the use of computers in engineering courses. All of the equations and homework problems in this text can be solved by using ordinary hand-held computers. However, more complicated problems involving numerical integration, finite-difference calculations, steady- and unsteady-state two-dimensional diffusion and conduction, and so on, can easily be solved with a computer using spreadsheets. Almost all undergraduate students are proficient in their use.

The SI (Systeme International d'Unites) system of units has been adopted by the scientific community. Because of this, the SI system of units has been adopted in this text for use in the equations, example problems, and homework problems. However, the most important equations derived in the text are also given in a dual set of units, SI and English, when different. Many example and homework problems are also given using English units.

Good for separations techniques

The only review that I can give for the text would be for the separations sections, of which our class concentrated mainly on the distillation regime. Excellent structured pairing of chapter labeling with homework and example problems. Open-ended problems required a sufficient level of engineering skills.

They make books like this?

First and foremost, if you're looking at this review right now, I'm sorry. Any fluid dynamics class is challenging and do not get discouraged. Engineering is difficult and be ready, this class is no exception to this difficulty. Just keep your head down, (preferably looking at a textbook), and you'll be just fine.
This book however is pretty good. It contains step by step examples of almost all the topics it covers. I referred to it many times whenever my professor would not be entirely clear with a concept he was teaching. Additionally, for my course all the work was out of this textbook. I usually was able to follow the step by step walk through that the book provides to arrive at the right answers for homework. Good luck!
