The stories and writing are remarkable, and you feel a deeper connection with all the characters by the time you finish the book

This book is an eye opening, page turning marvel, detailing one lady's time trying to run a brothel in supposed sexually conservative Britain. Do not be mistaken, the book is not full of sordid tell-tale stories. It is very much about one woman's amazing journey, to defy the odds time and time again, all the while, trying to afford a decent level of protection and discretion to those involved in the industry.

"Madam - Prostitutes, Punters and Puppets" is bursting with hilarious stories, dysfunctional, and the not so dysfunctional characters, and outright brilliant escapades at times. It literally choked me up with laughter in many parts, as Becky Adams shares stories about her first personal foray into the back of a Chinese oriental restaurant, through to a riotous trip to Royal Ascot, and the various dramatic forced relocations, while attempting to keep ahead of the law and authorities. There is a chuckle or a great laugh in this book for everyone however; if there ever was a book written to educate and inform people on why we should legalise the sex industry, this book is it.

What amazed me about the book and Becky Adams own personal story, is this lady's sheer determination, resilience, and ability, to overcome many difficult situations, to become a remarkable and outstandingly responsible business lady.

The reader will be surprised to see how in each and every situation - Becky Adams found a way to overcome the problem, keeping herself out of prison, trusting the right people, moving into the right direction, investing her money and in most cases, ending in the right place, most of the time despite the constant hounding.

Becky Adams displays a lateral form of thinking and dedication to customer care that most business people could only dream of delivering. She is a business leader, visionary and passionate about the welfare and security of her staff. I believe too many of us dismiss the argument for situational ethics. Yet, as I read this book, I realised that my thoughts on this came from a life different to many which the young girls who worked for Becky Adams had experienced, until they fortunately came under her guidance.

What struck me was how totally exposed these young girls working in this industry could be. While there are many ethical issues surrounding the issue of the legalisation of prostitution. One of the main arguments being that legalised prostitution would only result in an increase in human trafficking and crime. A view, I perhaps ignorantly held myself until I read this book. The very powerful and at times, shocking stories in this book, will make any reasonable person think and ponder for a moment. Clearly, were it not for Becky Adams intervention or protective motherly nature. Some of the girls throughout the book may have met with a very different ending or outcome in life.

The book is uniquely written, full of the very best of quirky British humour blended fantastically well with sadly, some of the very worst aspects of British society, and the darker sides of the sex industry. It politely depicts the double standards operated by police forces and local authorities in relation to the sex industry.
I would argue having read this truly fantastic book that this book will clear up any misconceptions people have about the sex industry. I also believe it will transform people's views on why we need a Madam Becky Adams in every brothel the length and breathe of the United Kingdom.

The book deftly highlights why we simply cannot afford to let crime gangs to keep running the brothels, or abusing and exploiting young girls like they currently do. We as a society need to stop judging and pretending that we know the very real dangers these girls are exposed to. We should listen and learn, how it could be operated professionally and tastefully, if given a decent chance by us all in modern society.

The truth is once I started reading, the dishes were piling up, the television muted and the coffee flowing aplenty, as I couldn't put the book down. The book is full of characters, life, personality and emotions. The stories and writing are remarkable, and you feel a deeper connection with all the characters by the time you finish the book. The book sucked me into this world far more readily than I expected it to.

"Madam - Prostitutes, Punters and Puppets" - by Becky Adams is a courageous, entertaining and above all, powerfully insightful book into the oldest trade in the world. I highly recommend this book regardless of what genre you normally read. This is one of those rare books that will have something in it for everyone.

I can say I've become a huge fan and admirer of Madam Becky Adams having read the book. I hope this is only the first, of what I hope, will be many books to follow.

Utterly Brilliant

What a brilliant book, not what I was expecting to be honest. A colleague bought it and gave me it to me as a joke and I really didn't expect it to be my cup of tea.
Have to say I couldn't put it down. Really funny and moving story and also lifts the veil on a part of our society most of us don't know anything about.
It is well written and fast paced with a steady flow of stories and revelations that keep you wanting to read on and see what happens next.
I had no idea this sort of thing went on in Milton Keynes, but having read the MK News this week there is an article on Madam Becky which highlights some news reports of years gone by involving Miss Adams and her adventures. And here I was thinking Milton Keynes was a quiet, sleepy place!
If you are a fan of tea, ginger nuts, puppets, topless sheriffs, Rolf Harris, or all of the above then buy this book!

Remarkably honest and frank - a definite must-read!!

I've always been interested in the sex industry and how things work, but it's very rare being able to hear it all from the horses' mouth so to speak.
When prostitution or brothels are mentioned in todays society, most people generally assume the girls involved are drug induced and living in poverty or fear, although this isn't always the case as outlined in Becky Adams new biography 'Madam'.

The book begins by giving a little backround info about Becky's childhood and the difficult relationship she shared with her mother before moving on to becoming owner of a topless carwash, brothel Madam and sex toy seller. She really has seen and done it all!

Who'd have thought that by simply keeping an eye on a good friend and making sure they were safe, could lead to a life of brothels, puppets, dildos and dongs?? Sounds bizzarre, but that's exactly how it all happened for Becky Adams.

Starting out by dropping her good friend off for jobs to ensure her safety, things quickly progressed for Becky until she was actaully arranging jobs herself, and before long, needed to find more girls and somewhere to work from! Madam Beckys Massage Parlour was to be the answer to it all.
Although faced with problems every step of the way, Becky proceeded to defy all the odds and become one of the most successful and well respected Madams on the circuit, even appearing on the Trisha show and This Morning as well as 'Person Services', a docu-soap which ran on ITV in 2003.

'Madam' seriously opened my eyes, and I thought I knew it all! Who'd have thought that hand puppets could bring so much satisfaction to a person ...especially a puppet like Spanky the monkey (you'll have to read the book to find out more). One particular incident had the tears streaming down my face and all i'm gonna say is 'Pat-O-Gram' - again, if you want to know more, get the book!! People come from all walks of life, and they never cease to amaze...what shocks one is sure to excite another, and there's certainly no shortage of strange and amazing people in Madam.
Although business was booming, things weren't quite so great for Becky herself. The daily battle with not only the irate neighbours, police and authorities, but also her own girls and her competitors, soon began to take its toll.
Most people assume that running a brothel would be an easy job, but after reading 'Madam', I see that that is far from the truth. There is so much more involved than just taking calls from wanting men and arranging a lady to satisfy them. Everyone out there seems to become the enemy, all wishing to see you fail and putting obstacles at every given opportunity. It takes a really strong person to overcome all those obstacles and I have the utmost admiration for Becky Adams and what she has achieved. She is living proof that alot of madams and prostitutes are in fact highly respectable women, many who work to fulfil their own fantasys as well as earn a few quid.

After 20 years in the business, Becky Admas gives a very honest and entertaining account of her life which brought a few shocked gasps, some schoolgirl giggles, hysterical laughter and a little sadness too. I'm sure that after reading Madam, many will change their opinion of sex workers and those who fight daily to ensure their safety. Well done Becky and thankyou for giving me the opportunity to review this for you, it's been an absolute pleasure and I wish you every success in the future.

Herman of Wharton and Chomsky of MIT lucidly document their argument that America's government and its corporate giants exercise control over what we read, see and hear. The authors identify the forces that they contend make the national media propagandisticthe major three being the motivation for profit through ad revenue, the media's close links to and often ownership by corporations, and their acceptance of information from biased sources. In five case studies, the writers show how TV, newspapers and radio distort world events. You Will Never Read The News The Same Way Again

This book is among the most enlightening, witty, effective and well-researched books I have ever read. There are 191 citations in a single chapter. It uses scientific measures such as number of inches a paper devotes to a subject (such as a client state's genocide vs. a communist or enemy states killings) across all time in their newspaper, or how many times it uses the word genocide to describe such killings. It clearly shows beyond shadow of doubt just how bias it is. It's hard to disagree with numbers.

If you're looking for an easy to confirm fact-finding mission on our media propaganda system, look here first. It absolutely blasts our media's failings and blatant serving as a mouthpiece for our government, writing uncritically whatever it says lest they compromise their #1 source for news to their readers. If you seek to rise above the mindless propaganda, find its origins, and learn to avoid falling victim to it, you absolutely must have this book.

Manufacturing the news...

I once wrote an article which was eventually published in the local newspaper with the subject title. It concerned my interactions with NY Times columnist, Tom Friedman, and how the "balanced" statement which I have made to him was transformed, through his unique alchemy, into a very one-sided statement that fit his pre-conceived ideas, and was published in one of his columns to reinforce those ideas. Yes, I was "misquoted," in concept, if not in fact. But my interest in the subject of what becomes news, and what does not, predated the above interaction by many years. Regrettably, it was only recently when I purchased and read this book. The central theme is an examination of what and how the news in made, particularly in the United States, and just as importantly, what is omitted (left on the cutting room floor, as the movie industry has it.)

This book was first published in the late `80's, and this edition contains a 36 page introduction which was written in 2002. Herman and Chomsky are listed as co-authors, and I struggled with the question of which one wrote more of the book: I believe it was Edward Herman. The book has numerous strengths. Remember that it was written long before the era of the purported "fair and balanced" reporting of Fox News, and therefore addressing the truly "low-hanging fruit" of Fox's biased coverage is not included. Much of the book looks at what we refer to as our "newspaper of record," the New York Times. Their thesis is rather provocative: much of our "news" should be viewed as propaganda, just as we KNOW the "news" issued by various totalitarian regimes is propaganda. To test this thesis, they utilize a method that involves establishing what they call dichotomies: observe how a single event is reported in at least two disparate news sources, one usually outside the United States; the other is to observe the reporting on largely similar events, but one event occurs to a population deemed "hostile" to the United States, the other event occurs to a "friendly" nation. There is an entire chapter on "worthy" and "unworthy" victims.

The analysis is performed on events that occur in the `60's, `70's and `80's, and frankly some of the events had slipped off my "memory radar" (if it was ever there in the first place!); other events I intensely remember, in part, due to my personal participation. As one example that the authors examine in detail is the treatment of the murder of Jerzy Popieluszko, a Polish priest, and that is juxtaposed with the murder of Archbishop Romero, as well that of four American nuns in El Salvador. Replete with extensive tables that document the coverage, the murder of a Polish priest received many times more coverage, since it occurred in a country that America, at the time, viewed as "hostile," (since it was part of the Soviet bloc), whereas the murder, even of Americans, in an American client state was downplayed. Numerous other examples were also provided, including the shooting down of a civilian airliner by Israel, and how that was juxtaposed with the same incident done by the Soviet Union. Examination of the news from elections in Nicaragua (hostile) and Guatemala (friendly) were likewise compared. Another entire chapter involved the completion fabrication of a KGB-Bulgarian connection behind the attempted assassination of the Pope by a right-wing Turkish fanatic (I had completely forgotten about this incident... in terms of sheer fabrication, it is an important one to remember.)

The last third of the book, or so, detailed media coverage of the American wars in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Most of the analysis I felt was correct, and corresponded to the recollections of my own participation. However there was one glaring mistake, on page 183, where the authors claimed: "From January 1965, the United States employed Korean mercenaries, some 300,000 in all, who carried out brutal atrocities in the South." (Note: throughout most of the war the Koreans only had one division of troops, some 7,000 or so, the ROK "Tiger" division. It operated in Binh Dinh province, where I was). Furthermore, for 20 pages or so, the author, or authors appeared to have a running feud with author William Shawcross, of Sideshow Kissinger, Nixon,and The Destruction of Cambodia and other books. After reading these pages, it was still unclear to me what the feud was all about; certainly, overall, they seemed to be making much the same points, and Shawcross's book on Cambodia remains an essential read on that war. I also thought comments about Senator Eugene McCarthy were somewhat churlish.

Overall, even with the passage of time (or perhaps because this book has withstood the passage of time, as is even more true today, in the era of Fox News), this is a very important read for one interested in the "food chain" of how we are fed the news. Please overlook some of the flaws. 4-stars.

If you watch or read news in the United States, you will think differently about the content you are consuming after you finish this book. It is a must read for anyone concerned about large media companies deciding our content for us. With that said, it was written a while ago, and now with the proliferation of blogs, there are many more choices of content to consume, although they are not any less biased.

Never received it, pending refund...

I never received what I ordered. The customer service staff were professional and courteous, and I am currently waiting for my refund. I would advise requesting or ordering a product with some sort of tracking number, because this would have saved me a lot of time in the end, and may have resulted in getting the product as well. Lesson learned.

of interest to those who enjoy local history of Ohio

When I did my review of Highland County, Ohio: A Pictorial History Celebrating 200 Years, it reminded me that I had two other books in my library on the history of Highland County, OH, where I lived for the first eighteen to twenty years of my life. When I was growing up, we lived near the village of New Market, where I went to elementary school, about seven miles south of the county seat of Hillsboro, where I went to junior-senior high school and graduated in 1972. Violet Morgan (1895-1983) was a long-time school teacher in Highland County. I never had Miss Morgan, because she taught in the county system and we were in the Hillsboro City school district, but I knew who she was and would see her from time to time.

Miss Morgan’s first book, Folklore of Highland County, consists of eight chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to Highland County with information from before the beginning of local history and about the county’s beginning. Chapter two is a general picture of the geography, topography, flora, fauna, and climate of the county. Chapter three is primarily about the Indians. Chapter four tells how the white men came. Chapter five discusses how the county grew. Chapter six consists of truth is stranger than fiction stories. Chapter seven covers the county’s towns and villages. And chapter eight is about some interesting people. In the back, there are a bibliography and an index. Apparently, her books captured the interest of author Jesse Stuart, of Kentucky, and partly through his influence, she received a nomination for a Guggenheim Award.

Copies of this book were in both our elementary school and local public libraries. Because of my interest in the history of the area in which I was born and raised, I checked the book out many, many times when a youngster and a teenager to do research. It was always interesting to read about the backgrounds about various nearby places with which I was intimately familiar because I had close friends or relatives who lived there and we would frequently drive through them from time to time. My own copy came to me in the books that I inherited from my Grandfather and Grandmother Workman, both of whom had been teachers in the Highland County schools with the author. I still treasure it. Miss Morgan also wrote another book, a novel entitled Squaw Winter (1955).

Married at ages 17 and 18, the Osborns were missionaries in India at 20 and 21. In 1949 they instituted the OSFO International Gospel Center-a world evangelism and missionary church organization. Their life commitment: To express and to propagate the gospel of Jesus Christ to people throughout the world.

Their guiding principle: the top priority of the church is the evangelization of the world. The Osborns have conducted mass crusades in over 70 nations, preaching to audiences ranging from 20,000 to 250,000 nightly and more. They have sponsored over 25,000 national preachers as full-time missionaries, reaching their own unreached tribes and villages. They have published gospel literature in 132 languages and dialects. They have produced documentary films and crusade tapes for public evangelism in nearly 80 major languages. They have provided airlifts and huge shipments of soulwinning tools for gospel missions and workers worldwide. They have furnished vehicles with films, projectors, screens, generators, P.A. systems, audio cassettes and cassette players, and great quantities of literature for evangelism abroad.

They are energetic and prolific writers. T.L. Osborn's living classic, Healing The Sick-now in its 62nd printing-has been a faith-building best-seller since 1951. Their big 512 page Classic Documentary--The Gospel According to T.L. &Daisy, is unmatched among Christian Publications.

The Osborns have probably reached and led more unreached souls to Jesus Christ in non-Christian lands, and may have witnessed more great healing miracles, than any other couple who has ever yet lived. Their team efforts in world evangelism are truly pace-setting as they proclaim the good news to the world: that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8).

Small book

This book is not complex, written in a child like language, it is fast and easy to read. The author writes about the importance of miracles for the modern Christian living today especially as the tool for winning the lost. I will quote: "One manifestation of God's miraculous power is worth a thousand lectures. One miracle is worth a thousand sermons... Whoever warns against false miracles should at least produce the genuine ones. Moses did, Elijah did, Peter did and Paul did." This is what the author keeps repeating and repeating. What is disappointing is that this book is very small 130 pages and on top of that fast and easy to read, before you know it you are done reading it. "Biblical Healing" 300 pages by the same author takes a little longer to read therefore more entertaining. But this book "Miracles" packs all the most important stuff in a short format. This is a very small book.

The evidence in this book is TOO much to ignore. God does heal and here is the evidence. The author has spent 60 years experiencing the healing power of God. Give God a chance!
