Ahead of their time - How the Nearings created their good life.

Although I really am enjoying reading this book, it describes the alternative life-style for the 1940s to 1960s, and therefore a little dated to be given a 5 star rating. Helen and Scott Nearing left New York city to live simply and self-sufficiently in remote Vermont. They grew their own food, built their house and farm buildings with local stone, lived without electricity or telephone, cut their own woods for fuel and gathered maple sugar to exchange for essentials (eg cement). They worked hard every morning leaving the afternoons free for recreation. They welcomed visitors (though the visitors had to work hard too). They used no animals, were strictly vegetarian and did not drink alchohol or caffeine drinks. They were never ill and both lived to a very old age.

This is a rare gem: One of those books I wish I'd read much younger in life, when I had more years ahead to implement many of the propositions and principles described in this book. A jobless couple traipses out to the woods of southern Vermont in the depths of the Great Depression intent on creating a life of security, satisfaction, improvement of society and a 4-hour workday. They pull it off and they tell you how! Given that Helen and Scott Nearing were in their fifties when they first made their exodus to the woods, there's much here for readers of all ages. Get this book.

We thought that we will be better off -yes it's true in many ways

I read this book more than 15 years ago, a university student in Korea -of course in Korean- where everything was rushing to development or money, without much time to pause and think where we are...
We thought that we will be better off -yes it's true in many ways, but we believe we lost something: a simple life harmonized with surroundings including not nature, but also with neighborhood.
I may be overestimating but for me, this book affected my life as much as Walden and Laozi (yes, I was 23 years old, and this book was more vivid and real for me than book written some hundreds or -even!- thousands years ago )

Now I bought this book and read again, I feel more clearly what this couple wanted to say, not only because it is in original language but also the world we live now -rushing to a place of materialism without knowing why we really have to do- makes this book even more compelling.

Eight Cylinders of Fun

Rumrunners by Eric Beetner is the best kind of fun. Imagine a serious mashup of Smokey and the Bandit and The Dukes of Hazzard distilled into something serious and deadly. That's just a taste of what you get with Rumrunners. A four-generation family clan of transporters are in a bad way with their boss. The traffic these days does not consist of moonshine; today's currency is meth, pseudo, cash, people, and violent takeovers of competitors. The risk for the transporters is life and death. The distinction of the difference in each generation of the family is accurately represented, but blood runs thicker than generation gaps. The magic of this book is that it makes you crave the feel of an 8 cylinder turbo charged throttle under your foot and some hard American steel in front of you as the carburetor kicks into turbo and the gravel gets loose under your tires. You feel the traction as you speed away from your pursuers. I've never wanted to spend time behind the wheel of a Plymouth Superbird as much as when I was reading this book. So much fun.

Beetner does it again...

Very few writers are as consistently good as Eric Beetner. His latest (published) novel Rumrunners falls into a canon of work that is highly underrated and just simply unknown. Beetner is about as prolific as they come and he has yet to disappoint.

Rumrunners reminds me of Elmore Leonard's prior work, but Beetner is no copycat.

Rumrunners could easily be optioned for film and my hope is that this author finally gets the attention he deserves.

Gritty and dark with a layer of family bonding.

Rumrunners was a dark, action packed novel about two guys teaming up and taking on one of Iowa's most feared crime families. Welcome to the life of the McGraws versus the Stanleys. This is going to be a bumpy ride, no doubt. But, Eric Beetner knows how to take a mixture of violence, crime, fast cars, tough men, and a perfect amount of wit and turn it into a great book.
Calvin McGraw is a crusty, 86-year-old man who spent his youth as a rumrunner for the Stanley clan. Years later, Webb McGraw, Calvin's son, is a driver for the Stanleys. Times have changed and Webb is driving trucks filled with drugs instead of liquor. He makes a call to his son, Tucker McGraw, asking if he would like to make the run with him. Tucker has no interest in continuing the family tradition of criminal activity and refuses to have anything to do with his father or grandfather. All that is about to change when Webb and the Stanley truck go missing. Now, the Stanley family come to Tucker's house to claim their ten million dollars.
Tucker has to call a grandfather that he has avoided for three years to search for the help needed to get these bad guys out of his life. Calvin shows up and the fun begins.
Beetner entertains you with a fast paced dialogue, quick wit, and the perfect amount of violence. This novel was gritty and dark with a layer of family bonding and love. His characters are so likable and I found myself hoping the ride would continue into another book. I loved the McGraw guys. They were a fun team that I missed as soon as I finished that last page.

About the Author
Matthew Beaumont is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at University College London. He is the author of Utopia Ltd.: Ideologies of Social Dreaming in England 1870-1900 (2005), and the co-author, with Terry Eagleton, of The Task of the Critic: Terry Eagleton in Dialogue (2009). You need tenacity!

The idea of this book was so enticing - I was reeled in by what it promised. An historical look at nocturnal London - fascinating! The reality of this offering however was a slow, turgid, heavy style of writing which was so ponderous - I got irritated, lost interest, found my whole effort to 'like' the book quite ludicrous.
I did give this book a really good try, 'gave it my best shot' (ask my friends who had long given up while I plodded on) but alas I didn't last the distance. A question : where was the Editor???

Walking the Midnight Streets

Charles Dickens was the best-known night walker - famously writing about his experiences of patrolling Victorian London during the hours of darkness in 'The Uncommercial Traveller' and thence in various of his novels. I was unaware, until reading this book, that the 'tradition' is as old as the city itself. Matthew Beaumont takes the reader on a 'literary walk' through the centuries, via the writings of the great, the good and the downright undeserving.

This is an excellent account of the tradition of staving off wakefulness by hitting the streets, and then using the experience as writing fodder. The research is extensive and impeccable, and there were many wry and amusing asides that kept me going through the 400 odd pages of closely written text.

I was given this book by one of my own readers who thought I might enjoy in it. Indeed I did. Recommended for all those interested in the history of London, seen from a very different angle. Also a fascinating read for ambulatory insomniacs. We are not alone.

A big disappointment

Far, far, far too long. And spoiled (at last for me) by the author's constant left wing political convictions.Every page dwells on the fate of the poor and the downtrodden often to the exclusion of all else.And they, as we all well know, are always with us! A lot of interesting facts and details about London - esp in the 16th and 17th centuries, but all of it well hidden behind his impenetrable thicket of politicized opinion.

How often does one really haveto restore a shredded document, sneak out of a meeting (somehowcrawling under the conference table and scooting out, unnoticed byall), or avoid a stockroom avalanche? The authors make no apologiesfor wrapping the meat of this recording in a lot of Wonder Bread, butit's ultimately filling, if a little thin. Though it's highly amusingto hear how one can avoid a lion attack on the job or thwart a lunchthief (think hidden jalapeños), this is certainly a gag gift morethan a guide. But it's good fun. Right in the middle of ......

I bought the "original" "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook". I loved its humor and so I gave this one a try. I cant say it's bad. However, it's somehow much more serious than the original one, thus less humorous and fun. The problem is: it's not indepth nor detailed enough to cover, in my opinion as a white collar for over 15 years, 1/5 of the common difficulties in an office.

In short, if you really wanna improve your survival opportunities in your job, there are many better alternatives in a bookstore. If you just wanna have fun, this is definitely not a good choice. Therefore, not recommended. If you really wanna buy it, I sincerely suggest you to read the "See sample pages" here on Amazon for a quick look of what those "tips" refer to.

Entertaining but less informative than the original Worst Case Book

Nice book on job interviews and surviving the workplace. Advice on how to set up your cubicle and common sense items on what to wear.

Some tongue in cheek parts though. Such as the section: "How to Get a Job You're not Qualified For". I hope nobody gets the Brain Surgeon job using the advise in this book!

Good advice such as staying positive during a job interview and answer confidently is addressed here.

Liked the area on how to disguise tattoos and how to fake tattoos if needed as well.

This book has some good information ,but is slated more toward corporate America, where you have a set dress code, and work in cubicles.

Silly, entertaining, but may actually be useful to someone!

Everyone has had dreadful bosses, scary or annoying co-workers, and everyone has felt that they arent' qualified for at least one job for which they are interviewing. Fewer of us get to sneak out of meetings- although many would love to!, or how to get out of various small places one could get trapped in. I personally really loved the section on "How to fix a Dented Company Vehicle" since my Volvo has a few dings I'd love to see gone.
The non-emergencies might be do-able; you might remember the various steps needed to pull those things off when you need a status-enhancing rumor to start flying around the workplace. Sadly, the emergencies will likely catch you unaware and you won't have the handy smooth edged guidebook in your pocket to pull out just as the office supplies start avalanching down upon you. Alas.
I was writing this review in order to be able to move the book out of my house when I decided I might need a refresher on some of these things. After all, someday soon my children will grow up and I'll need this book in case I decide to be a slacker! Just kidding!
