About the Author

Marge Lial (late) was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received bachelor's and master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, was affiliated with American River College. An avid reader and traveler, her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. Her interest in archeology lead to trips to various digs and ruin sites, producing some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

 

Thomas W. Hungerford received his bachelor’s degree from Holy Cross and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He taught for many years at the University of Washington (Seattle) before moving to Cleveland State University in 1980. He has been at St. Louis University since 2003. He has written a number of research articles in algebra and several in mathematics education. Dr. Hungerford is the author or coauthor of more than a dozen mathematics textbooks, ranging from high school to graduate level, several of which are published by Addison-Wesley. He is active in promoting the effective use of technology in mathematics instruction. Dr. Hungerford has also been a referee and reviewer for various mathematical journals and has served on National Science Foundation panels for selecting grant recipients.

 

John P. Holcomb, Jr. received his bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure University and his Ph.D. from the University at Albany, State University of New York. He is professor and chair and frequently publishes with researchers in a variety of disciplines where he provides statistical analysis. Dr. Holcomb has also authored several papers in statistical education and is very active in the American Statistical Association and the Mathematical Association of America. He was named a Carnegie Scholar in 2000 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and in 2003 received the Waller Award from the American Statistical Association for outstanding teaching of introductory statistics. 

 

Bernadette Mullins received her bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University and her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. She is currently professor of mathematics at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama, where she arrived in 2000. She has published numerous articles in the fields of commutative ring theory and mathematics education. She has served as co-investigator for several National Science Foundation grants related to improving mathematics education. Dr. Mullins has won four awards for her excellence in teaching, including the Bob Whetstone award at BSC. Throughout her career, she has been active in Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) and the Mathematical Association of America, and was elected Alabama State Director of the MAA in 2013.

Good, but not great

This text was required for a Business Calculus class at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. As far as a mathematics textbook goes, it is an ok book. However, it could be a lot better. In my experience, the gold standard is Blitzer's College Algebra, College Algebra (6th Edition), which I used in high school.
The lessons themselves are not terrible at guiding students through the various concepts taught. The progression is gentle (almost too gentle) and doesn't do a good job at showing what's next. Which I found made it more difficult to tie chapters together.
Lial's text also includes example problems, "life applications," and somewhat step-by-step instructions. The instructions/examples are alright, but lack a lot of natural language and true step-by-step examples. The life applications are good and do a great job of showing how various vocations incorporate concepts.
Overall, I would not recommend this text to anyone looking for a text to use (see Blitzer), but if you have been assigned this book, it's not the worst. With the right teacher one can definitely learn calculus.

Joe O'Mahoney is Lecturer in Organization Studies at Cardiff University Business School. Prior to this he was Lecturer in Organization and Technology at Lancaster University. Joe has held a number of positions in industry including the role of Senior Business Consultant at 3G Mobile where he was involved with the start up of the company. Joe was also Director and Co-founder of Stay Mobile, Technology Ltd, a company that develops and leases a product for recharging mobile phones in public places. Another lovely book from Joanne DeMaio

This is the third book from Joanne DeMaio that I have read and reviewed. With her first book, A Whole Latte Life, I was introduced to what I have come to think of as the Joanne DeMaio formula. Her books all involve a female character at a turning point in their lives. A point where they totally uproot the life they have known and choose a different path. With her second book, Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans, I mentioned that it was like slipping on a favorite pair of Keds. With this third book, Snowflakes and Coffee Cakes, it is all still there for me. Everything I love about her and her and books.

In this case, the main character is Vera. After losing her job as a reporter in the big city, she is smitten by a big old country house and barn in her home town. On a whim, she purchases it. It's of course, a lovely quaint town in New England, perfect for a Christmasy love story. She meets Derek, the handsome owner of the local hardware store, and the sparks begin almost immediately. But Derek is carrying around a lot of grief and the Christmas season is particularly hard on him. Vera's father, a local meteorologist is also prominent in the book. His folksy weather reports and snowflakes facts add even more charm to the story.

Yes, you can pretty much spot the ending a mile away. But that doesn't matter. I don't read these books for the ending, I read them for the journey. The journey, which is always pleasant and lovely.

I feel like her books are easily identifiable, I would recognize one even if I didn't know it was hers, and for me that is not a bad thing. When I want a warm, comforting book, with a strong female character making life changing decisions, with just the right amount of romance thrown in, I know where to turn.

Heartwarming, Magical Story

SNOWFLAKES AND COFFEE CAKES is a heartwarming story of loss and love, hope and happiness.

The story is set in the quaint New England town of Addison with a wonderful small-town atmosphere. The characters are warm, likable and realistic.

Vera Sterling, recently fired from her Boston newspaper job, goes home to Addison for her sister Brooke's wedding. As she's leaving to return to Boston, she discovers an old colonial home on the banks of Addison Cove for sale. On an impulse, she buys the house and adjoining barn not really knowing what the future holds for her.

As she begins to make repairs on the house, she meets Derek Cooper, whose family owns the local hardware store. Derek is a quiet-sort of guy filled with grief and guilt over his young daughter's drowning death five years earlier. After losing his daughter and the break-up of this marriage, Derek exists but doesn't live.

Derek has a ritual each year at Christmas he conducts in honor of his late daughter and the entire community turns out to help. This year a terrible snowstorm makes his ritual impossible and Vera does all she can to make the day special just the same.

In the end, Vera and Derek discover that life comes at you every day no matter what has happened and you have to learn how to make the most of it.

A sweet holiday-themed story with lots of cozy Christmas descriptions

After losing her job at a big city newspaper, journalist Vera Sterling finds herself longing to settle down in the small Connecticut town where she grew up. She buys a stately old home (in need of a lot of TLC) that overlooks Addison cove, where she begins to reimagine the course her life is taking.

Derek Cooper’s family owns a hardware store in Addison, and he begins doing repairs on Vera’s old Dutch Colonial. Derek is struggling with a painful loss and has mixed feelings about the approaching holiday season. Vera and Derek begin to have feelings for each other, but will Christmas, with all its memories (both joyful and heartbreaking) bring them closer together or drive them apart?

With most of the story taking place in the weeks leading up to Christmas, this is a warm and fuzzy story that’s chock full of inviting holiday details. There’s snow (and plenty of it!), tree decorating, gallons of hot cocoa and lots of descriptions of holiday preparations. I thought the author did a good job of evoking a cozy Christmas feeling. The romance between Derek and Vera fell pretty flat for me. They seem to just fall in love without having had much interaction with each other. The dialog is also not a strong point of this story; it felt very forced in spots, more like the characters were reciting monologues or reading from a script than having a conversation.

I decided to buy this because I’m a Connecticut native and couldn’t resist a holiday story set in my own back yard (and I have to say that Vera’s Christmas Barn reminded me a lot of the lovely “Pink Sleigh” shop in Westbrook CT, a magical place where even a die-hard Scrooge will get caught up in the Christmas Spirit). I did enjoy it as a sweet and cozy Christmas fairy tale, but if you’re looking for something more on the realistic side, this one probably won’t do the trick – it’s pure holiday fantasy.

Very little strong language (I can recall only one “swear” word off the top of my head), and no sexual content.

He was named by the NEH as the sixteenth Jefferson Lecturer, the nation's highest honor in the humanities.

Interesting and Insightful !

Just what sorts of ideas were going on in the Framers' minds when the drafted the federal constitution? This book provides great insight into the ideas, concepts and intellectual history and framework that the Framers were operating upon.
An extremely capable historian and writer, McDonald starts out by noting some important considerations facing the Framers: protecting the life, liberty and property of citizens; their commitment to republican government (although there was disagreement and uncertainty as to what that precisely meant); history (in the sense of convention, legacy and their place in its continuing flow); and political theory.
The chapter on the Rights of Englishmen begins with the Framers understandings of freedom, liberty, and property-as inherited through English common law, refined by Blackstone, and developed independently in the New World. Blackstone considered property a third "absolute right," following life and liberty. Of course, he used the word property in the more narrow sense of dominion (rather than the sense of proper as something proper or particular to an individual person). In any case, McDonald discusses Blackstone's qualifications and exceptions to this absolute right, which allowed for the regulation of property (through sumptuary laws, eminent domain, taxation, and the granting of monopoly privileges). McDonald then relates America's experience in light of the English understandings and tradition. The emphasis on property is particular important because, until the Revolution, Americans' general views about liberty were grounded in the same kinds of historical, philosophical and legal foundations as their views of property.
McDonald's chapter on political theory is particularly enjoyable, as he traces the tensions existing amongst the different theories of rights held by the Framers, as well as some of their respective implications. He discusses the appeals made by Americans to natural law as transcending the general norms of English law. A succinct discussion of John Locke's natural law views, which McDonald insists has been "astonishingly misinterpreted." McDonald then proceeds to an interesting comparison and contrast of the two predominant strands of republicanism in America: puritan and agrarian. He proceeds to analyze the "country party" oppositionists as a third influential group and delves into Montesquieu. Many readers will be struck with the differences McDonald describes between the notion of "separation of powers" and a system of "checks and balances"-since most people today describe them as one in the same.
Also interesting is the political economy chapter. McDonald has written more extensively on this subject elsewhere, and it is also the subject of much attention in his stellar biography of Alexander Hamilton. Indeed, the latter part of the chapter is devoted to Hamilton's sophisticated ideas about commerce and finance. The earlier part of the chapter discusses the influence of the French physiocrats, Adam Smith and other early political economists, and continues with an overview of England's experience with public debt.
One chapter is devoted to principles and interests-both those that motivated Framers and (relatedly) how the Framers understood the role and effects of those concepts. Here one finds an interesting discussion of Madison's understanding of factions-made famous in Federalist No. 10. McDonald traces the intellectual roots of this idea, discussing the views of Hume on factions and contrasting them with the Bolingbrokean understandings of republicanism. "[I]t is meaningless to say the Framers intended this or that the Framers intended that," notes McDonald, "their positions were diverse and, in many particulars, incompatible." His survey certainly affirms this understanding (which is also adequately covered in Jack Rakove's "Original Meanings").
A succinct chapter describing the Constitutional Convention follows, in which McDonald catalogues how different groups at the Convention employed the arguments of different political theorists in order to advance their respective viewpoints as to how the federal government was to be constituted, what powers were to be entrusted to it, and to which respective branch they would be entrusted. Much to my delight, McDonald contrasts the understanding of the separation of powers as embodied in the Constitutional document with pre-existing understandings of the separation of powers and the duties commonly thought proper to the respective branches.
Finally, the concluding chapter discusses the powers given to the federal government in the Constitution, and how they operate.
All in all, this is an excellent volume that anyone appreciating political theory, American history and our nation's Constitution should enjoy.

The debates, politics and legacy of the 1787 Constitution

~Novus Ordo Seclorum~ by conservative historian Forrest McDonald is an astute and poignant political history of the fledgling American republic. The framers of the Constitution sought introduce a new concept into the political discourse, namely federalism. They, of course, were all nationalist in the sense that they hoped to strengthen and stabilize a general government. The 1787 Convention hardly started from scratch and was built on the polity existing under the Articles of Confederation. McDonald perceptively captures efforts to balance out the powers amongst the republican institutions through corporate liberty. Each institution jealously guarded their prerogatives as Madison and Jefferson was essentially the prop for the federal regime created in 1787.

The first introductory chapter boldly proclaims that framers had a problem following their independence: that problem succinctly stated was the nature and form of their republic was to take. The framers were unanimous in the belief that the proper end of government was protecting life, liberty, and property. Prior to 1787, they had yet to resolve the scope and role to be played by the general government and it was agreed that that government under the Confederation was scarcely functioning effectively as it was too weak. The second chapter entitled The Rights of the Englishman brilliantly gives a history of the Anglo-American common law tradition that was so cherished by the colonials. It was their go to fortify, uphold and secure the cherished Rights of the Englishman for citizens of the American polity. The third chapter entitled Systems of Political Theory is an exploration of political debates common amongst the framers. They were well schooled in the classics from Cicero to Lycurgus. Likewise, they were familiar with Montesquieu, but opted for prudence and temperance in their statecraft. They eschewed the Jacobin radicalism being fomented across the Atlantic in France by Rousseau and Robespierre. The fourth chapter entitled Systems of Political Economy deals with explorations into political economy. The body of thought delineated as Political economy is simply those "ideas about the policies governments should or should not pursue regarding property relations to promote the general welfare." The bulk of this chapter deals with the influence of Adam Smith on the colonials and the cunning Hamiltonian economic proposals like protective tariffs, bounties for manufacturers and the Bank of the United States. McDonald captures the political struggles that ensued in Washington's cabinet as Randolph and Jefferson fought Hamilton tooth and nail to thwart his machinations. The remaining three chapters essentially chronicle the political developments, debates and theorizing during the Confederation and especially during those pivotal moments in 1787 when the Constitution was being framed.

The breadth and scope of this book is amazing. McDonald gives a great deal of insight on the framing of the American Republic. He does so with a remarkable deal of conservative sobriety and is not afraid to convey his admiration for the American experiment in republican self-government. McDonald gives enormous insight into the debates on jurisprudence, history, political philosophy, and political economy that took place in the pivotal years during and after the 1787 Convention.

Engaging intellectual history!

I bought this book based on the favorable reviews below and I was not disappointed. Specifically, I was interested in understanding the original intent(s) of the authors of the US Constitution in hopes of getting a historical context in which to locate contemporary debate regarding methods for interpreting the Constitution. This book gave me much, much more, and in engrossing and elegant prose to boot.

McDonald is erudite and his knowledge has both breadth and depth. As reviewer Nisala A. Rodrigo pointed out, reading McDonald requires some work due to the level of sophistication he uses to explore the 18th century intellectual context. However, I found this text to be a useful and not overwhelming introduction to constitutional history. This is the first book I've read on the origins of the Constitution and I felt I comprehended the bulk of what McDonald was discussing. As Rodrigo suggested, the chapter on the actual making of the Constitution was a bit tedious. However, McDonald was tremendously helpful in providing a sense of the mental horizons and preoccupations of the founding fathers. For instance, I came away with the impression that the founding fathers did not have strong opinions about how original intent should be factored into future decisions involving the interpretation of the Constitution. The founding fathers were focused on substantive issues and the nitty-gritty compromises necessary to get the document ratified rather than worried by questions of hermeneutical methodologies. In fact, I believe McDonald suggests that a question regarding the appropriate role that original intent plays in judicial decisions would not have even been available to the founding fathers given that such issues did not exist at the time of ratification. This insight really helped me to see a bit of irony in contemporary debate regarding original intent - namely that questions of 'original intent' may not have been among the original intentions of the founding fathers.

On a broader scope, I found the first four chapters (pp. 1-142) the most interesting. McDonald sketches the development of political, economic and legal thought in the 17th and 18th centuries in Britain and America. Although he uses some technical jargon he is careful to provide clear definitions so that non-specialists can understand his scholarship. His explanation of the views of Hume, Smith, Steuart and Mandeville regarding laissez faire and the usefulness of self-interest for achieving the public good are simply brilliant. McDonald's elucidation of the political theories of Locke, Montesquieu, Bolingbroke and Harrington, the effects that these theories had on the Constiutional milieu, and the pervasive suspicion of financial institutions and instruments helps to identify the tensions between creditors and debtors, between speculators in land and in securities, between agrarians and bankers, and, in England, between Crown and country. And understanding the competing interests brings into sharp relief the 18th century Constitutional context by defining what was at stake for whom.

In short, a terrific read. Do not be intimidated by McDonald's scholarship - it is manageable and even engaging.

Now, in Management Challenges for the 21st Century, Drucker looks at the profound social and economic changes occurring today and considers how management--not government or free markets--should orient itself to address these new realities.

Drucker sees the period we're living in as one of "PROFOUND TRANSITION--and the changes are more radical perhaps than even those that ushered in the 'Second Industrial Revolution' of the middle of the 19th century, or the structural changes triggered by the Great Depression and the Second World War." Most of what we've seen from Drucker over the last five years has been autobiographical reminiscences, reissues of earlier classic works, and collections of conversations and writings. This new title is being promoted as Drucker's first major book since Post-Capitalist Society (1993). Even so, it is more a collection of themes--albeit grand ones--that have occupied Drucker during this last decade of the century. And, as Drucker acknowledges, he has already "pilot-tested" much of this material in the form of major articles in Forbes, California Management Review, and Harvard Business Review. His overriding concern is the future challenges we face together as a society. Drucker divorces management from business, arguing that it is the "distinguishing organ of any and all organizations." He examines the concept of productivity as it applies to knowledge workers. Finally, in a crowning finale, he stresses the new demands that will be placed on the individual, concluding that workers will outlive the organizations that employ them--putting responsibility on each of us to "manage [our]selves." The Most Timely of Peter Drucker's Books

MANAGEMENT CHALLEGES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY is a breakthrough work, even for Peter Drucker. Through 6 impressive essays, Professor Drucker sets the agenda for the next several decades, for every organization and individual. He begins by pointing out that the way most people think about management is all wrong, and immediately needs to be changed. He outlines the needed changes. He then picks the key strategy issues that will strongly affect all organizations for the next 50 years. Next, he points out that we live in turbulent times and that one must lead the changes that one's organization must make so they occur faster than for the competition. There is no choice for any organization, except to fail to survive. From there, he points out that we have information TECHNOLOGY, but very little information worth looking at on the devices the technology brings us. He goes on to define what must be done to create the right information. In a remarkable section, he then tells how to create knowledge worker productivity (something he has said in the past that no one knows how to do). Finally, he provides a remarkable essay on how to get the most out of yourself, for yourself. These essays were previewed in leading publications, and substantially improved from the originals. There is no repetition of his work and thinking from earlier books. This is like finding a whole new Peter Drucker. YOU ARE MAKING A BIG MISTAKE IF YOU FAIL TO BUY, READ, AND APPLY THE IMPORTANT LESSONS OF THIS BOOK. If you read only one book by Peter Drucker, read this one! I was especially pleased to see that he addressed the stalls that delay organizational progress such as the old habits reinforced by tradition, unwillingness to address the new through disbelief, poor communications at all levels (he states the rules that you must follow to be a better communicator and be more effective), needless interactions fostering mindless bureaucracy, the temptation to procrastinate (standing still in front of a truck about to run you over is a mistake you will not repeat), avoiding the unattractive key issues of your organiztion (he recommends doing the dirty jobs yourself for several weeks a year in order to understand how to improve), and failing to set high standards. As always, the book is filled with powerful questions that you can answer for yourself in order to accomplish much, much more and feel great while you do so. Read and apply the lessons of this book and you will have many more 2,000 percent solutions (achieving 20 times the usual results with the same resources or getting the same results 20 times faster).

Six Major Factors of Knowledge Worker Productivity.

Peter F. Drucker writes in the Introduction, "...this is not a book of 'predictions,' not a book about the 'future.' The challenges and issues discussed in it are already with us in every one of the developed countries and in most of the emerging ones (e.g., Korea or Turkey). They can already be identified, discussed, analyzed and prescribed for. Some people, someplace, are already working on them. But so far very few organizations do, and very few executives. Those who do work on these challenges today, and thus prepare themselves and their institutions for the new challenges, will be the leaders and dominate tomorrow. Those who wait until these challenges have indeed become 'hot' issues are likely to fall behind, perhaps never to recover. This book is thus a Call for Action."
In this context, in Chapter 5 of this invaluable book, Drucker focuses on knowledge worker. He says that "the most important, and indeed the truly unique, contribution of management in the 20th century was the fifty-fold increase in the productivity of the 'manual worker' in manufacturing. The most important contribution management needs to make in the 21st century is similarly to increase the productivity of 'knowledge work' and the 'knowledge worker.' The most valuable assets of a 20th-century company were its production equipment. The most valuable asset of a 21st-century institution, whether business or nonbusiness, will be its knowledge workers and their productivity."
Thus, he defines six major factors determine knowledge worker productivity as follows:
1. Knowledge worker productivity demands that we ask the question: "What is the task?"
2. It demands that we impose the responsibility for their productivity on the individual knowledge workers themselves. Knowledge workers have to manage themselves. They have to have authonomy.
3. Continuing innovation has to be part of the work, the task and the responsibility of knowledge workers.
4. Knowledge work requires continuous learning on the part of the knowledge worker, but equally continuous teaching on the part of the knowledge worker.
5. Productivity of the knowledge worker is not-at least not primarily-a matter of the quantity of output. Quality is at least as important.
6. Finally, knowledge worker productivity requires that the knowledge worker is both seen and treated as an "asset" rather than a "cost." It requires that knowledge workers want to work for the organization in preference to all other opportunities.
He argues that each of these requirements-except perhaps the last one-is almost the exact opposite of what is needed to increase the productivity of the manual worker.

Class act

I've recently purchased some management books at Amazon, and this one is one of the best. Mr. Drucker has precise and plain spoken knowledge he imparts to us about the challenges that management face (motivation, competition, e.g.). His years of experience are easily shared in this book.
Other superb books I recommend that I have recently read are Ponder's "The Leader's Guide: 15 Essential Skills," and any Ken Blanchard or Warren Bennis book.

"How strong," asks Shenfield (Soviet studies, Univ. of Birmingham, U.K.; The Nuclear Predicament: Explorations in Soviet Ideology) "are fascist traditions, tendencies, and movements in Russia today?" The author concludes that fascist tendencies are alive and well in Russia yet have weak roots and shallow support. In The Faces of Janus: Marxism and Fascism in the Twentieth Century (Yale Univ., 2000), James Gregor invoked the popular definition of fascism, which focuses on the outward manifestations of totalitarianism, imperialism, and xenophobia, and tied it to Soviet institutions. Shenfield, however, differentiates between this popular definition and the more precise academic one, which sees fascism as "an authoritarian populist movement that seeks to preserve and restore premodern patriarchal values within a new order based on communities of nations, race or faith." This precise definition allows him to compare Russian political parties and organizations accurately to each other and assess the depth of fascism in Russia. Very informative investigation into the post-Soviet extreme right

The author starts with a short review on competing conceptualizations of fascism in the Western and Russian literature. On the basis of this, he presents his own, new, eclectic definition of generic fascism. He then asks: Does Russia have a fascist tradition?, and surveys 19th and 20th century Russian pre-revolutionary and Soviet nationalist thought and politics. His conclusion is that there have been only few signficant, fully fascist ideas espoused by Russian publicists and politicians before the fall of the Soviet Union. Interestingly, Shenfield identifies Konstantin Leontiev (1831-91) as a significant pre-cursor of Russian fascism, a classification that may raise controversy among students of Russian thought. Shenfield then moves to the contemporary political scene, and searches for fascist tendencies in nationalist intellectual circles, the various communist successor-parties, the Orthodox churches, and the neo-pagan movement. His fourth chapter is devoted to putatively fascist trends in the Cossack, skinhead, and soccer-fan sub-cultures. Chapter five deals with Zhirinovskii's so-called Liberal-Democratic Party of Russia. Chapter six tells the story of the rise and fall of Barkashov's neo-Nazi Russian National Unity party. Chapter seven analyzes two of the foremost Russian neo-fascist publicists, Aleksandr Dugin and Eduard Limonov as well as Limonov's National-Bolshevik Party. Chapter eight surveys a number of lesser-known Russian extremely nationalist parties with fascist tendencies, or a clearly fascist doctrine. Chapter nine compares those organizations identified as fully or partly fascist in terms of their organizational structures, activities, strategies, and ideologies. In his conclusions, Shenfield asks whether it is appropriate to speak of a "Weimar Russia." Although there is "no significant near-term danger of a fascist conquest of power [...] the possibility of [such a development] in Russia in the longer term is not completely excluded." (p. 262) In a short afterword, Shenfield comments on the cracks and beginning dissolution in September 2000 in the party he had paid most attention to, Barkashov's "Russkoe Natsional'noe Edinstvo." His impressive 26-page bibliography is accompanied with a short biographical note on the state of Russian and Anglo-saxon research into contemporary Russian extreme nationalism, and right-radical party politics. Shenfield notes that "English-language scholarly sources on fascist tendencies and movements in post-Soviet Russia are meager. [...] The situation is somewhat better when it comes to Russian-language sources." (p. 299)

Against this background, Shenfield's book is pioneering in, at least, two regards. First, his book represents an exemplary and, so far, uniquely successful venture to synthesize the findings of the author's own, close reading of a multitude of primary sources with a wide variety of Russian and Western secondary scholarly, publicistic and journalistic accounts (many of the latter collected with the help of Robert Otto whom Shenfield singles out in his acknowledgements). With the exception of some relevant German-language books and papers, Shenfield uses almost all the significant Russian and Western secondary literature that is available today (notably including a number of revealing articles from the Russian provincial press).

Second, Shenfield makes a serious attempt to integrate his research into the Russian extreme right into the field of comparative fascist study. In his introductory chapter, he introduces as many as 28 Western and Russian definitions of, or statements on, generic fascism. From this survey, Shenfield's extracts four different definitions of fascism that he uses in the ensuing narrative to test the fascist character of this or that Russian ideology. The limitations of space for this review do not allow to do full justice to the certainly sophisticated, but, in my view, ultimately, misleading interpretation of fascism as an international phenomenon that Shenfield presents.

Apart from Shenfield's idiosyncratic conceptualization of generic fascism, there would be only few principal critical comments I would have to make. With regard to Zhirinovskii's LDPR, Shenfield's characterization of this party's "ideology in the most recent period as one of national-imperial liberalism, severely contaminated, but not overwhelmed, by fascist elements" (p. 104) is, in my view, unnecessarily confusing. The attribute "Liberal-Democratic" in the party's name has to do with its origins as a pseudo-party set-up artificially by conservative elements of the late Soviet ancien regime in 1990 in order to discredit, mislead, and split-up the genuinely liberal-democratic movement rising from Russian civil society at that time.

These and a few other imprecisions, notwithstanding, I would once more single out Shenfield's book as by far the most informative analysis, and pertinent interpretation of the post-Soviet Russian extreme Right published in a Western language since 1993. Shenfield is to be congratulated for having produced as dense an analysis as this of a phenomenon that is now barely 10 years old. His book will surely become a standard reference in both, the study of post-Soviet Russian party politics, and comparative fascist studies.

Sound background on the subject

Soundly written and, though dated by the rise of President Putin, well worth reading as a background on the subject. Stalin was, as Trotsky wrote, "Genghis Khan with a telephone," and the nuances of fascism in Russia are well worth understanding. Besides, Eduard Limonov, the founder-leader of the National Bolshevist Party, contributed to NEW YORK PRESS, one of the best alternative papers of its day.
