About the Author
Ethel Johnston Phelps (1914–1984) held a master's degree in medieval kiterature, coedited a Ricardian journal, and published several articles on fifteenth-century subjects. She compiled two anthologies of feminist folktales from around the world, Tatterhood and The Maid of the North.

Not Extremely Memorable, But Well Done

My mother purchased this book for me as a very young girl, along with other collections of short-stories, and I remember being enchanted with it. The legends are fascinating, although I don't think the fact that they were all about young women and girls ever crossed my mind (an observation that leads me to believe this book would be good for boys, as well).
I recently re-read the stories, and was delighted. I remember being confused as a girl, since the places, people, and customs are mostly foreign, and so I wouldn't recommend these books to any one younger then six. And even then, with the lack of pictures, it's great for adults to read to kids (no matter what age, within reason). Worth the money.

Great for girls

This book is awesome, esp. for girls. It features folk tales in which the protagonists are all smart, strong, clever, just girls or women. We read it to my daughter at 4, and at 9, she still goes back and rereads the stories.

Girls who can

It was not until after reading these stories to my daughter, that I realized that the fairy tales my generation of women had grown up usually had heroines who needed to be rescued. The heroines in Tatterhood solve problems, rescue themselves and sometimes their princes. Hopefully girls will identify with these competent and confident heroines. I don't know many women who can afford to sit around in an ivory tower waiting for a prince to rescue them. These are wonderful, amusing tales from another and equally valid perspective.

Born in Masatepe, Nicaragua, Sergio Ramrez rose from humble beginnings to the vice presidency of Nicaragua. As an author he has published political essays, short stories, and novels. He is the winner of the Premio Internacional Alfaguara 1998.

A Narrative of an Episode in Nicaragua History

Book Review: Adios Muchachos ( In Spanish) Author: Sergio Ramirez
The Author: Sergio Ramirez is re-known nicaraguan writer, a lawyer, and former member of the sandinista governing Junta throughout the eighties, then vice-president and more recently, chairman of the Sandinista political party. As a novelist he is known as author of several novels, his mosr recent is "Margarita Esta Linda La Mar" (1996), essayist and short story writer.
More than one country in Latina America had a writer for president. Costa Rica, Peru and Cuba (Marti), are only a few to name. Sergio managed to stay at the highest ranking governing circles for almost two decades from 1979 until his resignation in 1999 from his seat as Chairman of the Sandinista powerful political party. This was 3 years after his defeat running for his second term as vice-president candidate in 1996.
This book reveals a credible account from a true insider of the preamble to the war, the glory of victory, and the un-expected political struggle that the Sandinistas went through to stay in power and ultimately lose it. Because the free elections took place in a country that had been for ten years fighting a Contra War which depleted the national budget making it almost impossible to rule.
In his narrative, the protagonists come and go ( or die) like characters in a play. Some manage to come back "with a different costume" like a in giant theater, and history becomes a play with episodes. As Sergio relates, "I am glad I was not born before or after this chapter of history, because I would have missed it". Asked if he has any regrets, Sergio answers: "We did what it was right back then, what happened later we had few idea, how it would be "
Apparently, after reading the Epilog it seems that the true protagonist (if any other than the revolution itself) is Idania ( who was my sister) symbolizing the spirit of sacrifice and heroism that made this chapter of the nicaraguan history possible. Her martyrdom symbolizes the crushing of a dream. I was particularly moved by this. Idania, Araceli and Dora Maria were for the nicaraguan revolution what Haydee Santamaria and Celia Sanchez were for its cuban counterpart.
Sergio concludes his story with an interview with Claudia, the daughter that Idania had left in care of her parents ( and mine) when death came by surprise ( and to her 5 comrades) as member of the Sandinista Commando that was actually running the war in the Western Front in April 1979. The interview takes place in a Deli shop in Arlington, Virginia, an area of town where lobbyists, journalists and essayists meet for lunch and discuss policies and legislation. As she waves good bye before boarding the subway train, the scene symbolizes the return to normal lives of the protagonists of this Episode in the nicaraguan history. Apparently as if nothing has happened in last 20 years. Or has it? Is there a legacy or rewards? Sergio says there is...

The Mistakes of Nicaragua, Retold.

The life of Sergio Ramirez has been an effort to bring about logical, intelligent change to the Central American isthmus and to develop his narrative along revolutionary lines. This book is a prime example of the importance of Sergio as one of the most essential and overlooked authors in Latin American literature. His ability to bring alive the dreams, plights, success and defeat of the Nicaraguan revolution, more than 10 years their electoral downfall, shows how politics and human sensitivity are intertwined in Latin America. His account of the Sandinista revolution is excellent because from its start, he was a player, and although he did not fall within the dogmas of some of his contemporaries, he is not without fault. At its core, his account continues that old school adage "Don't mess with Uncle Sam".

About the Author
Eric M. Eisenberg is Professor of Communication and since 2007 has served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida. Eisenberg graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Rutgers University in 1977 and received his doctorate in Organizational Communication from Michigan State University in 1982. Dr. Eisenberg twice received the National Communication Association award for the outstanding research publication in organizational communication, as well as the Burlington Foundation award for excellence in teaching. Dr. Eisenberg is the author of over 70 articles, chapters, and books on the subjects of organizational communication, health communication, and communication theory. As Dean of the largest college at USF with nearly 600 faculty, 18,000 students, and a budget of nearly $100M-- Eisenberg has sharpened the focus of faculty work through the creation of 3 interdisciplinary schools, 11 interdisciplinary centers, and the identification of 5 areas of research excellence. Even in the most difficult of economic times, he has been successful in recruiting world class faculty talent. In addition, he has played a major role in the university s strategic efforts to measurably improve student success through transformed pedagogy. Working closely with faculty, staff, and academic advisors, he has successfully applied a combination of policy and process changes, course redesign, and intrusive advising to significantly impact rates of progression, graduation, and employment.Angela Trethewey is Professor of Communication and since 2014 has served as the Dean of the College of Communication and Education at California State University, Chico. Trethewey graduated, suma cum laude, from Chico State in 1988 and received her doctorate in communication, with a specialty in organizational communication, from Purdue University in 1994. Before returning to her Alma Mater to serve as Dean, she was on the faculty at University of Washington and later served as Professor and Director of the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University. There, she was a founding and active member of the Project for Wellness and Work life and the Center for Strategic Communication. She has devoted her career to the study and teaching of communication, particularly as it impacts our individual, organizational and national identities. As a scholar, she is the author of thirty articles and book chapters and three books. As a leader, Trethewey routinely draws upon her training in organizational communication theory and critical research methods to help her analyze problems and opportunities, cultivate a culture of innovation, inclusion and participation, and foster the leadership potential of faculty and students. Marianne LeGreco is Associate Professor of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. LeGreco graduated from Bradley University in 2000 where she competed for the national champion Bradley Speech Team. She received her Master s and Doctorate from Arizona State University in 2002 and 2007, respectively. Dr. LeGreco is the 2013 recipient of the Service Engagement Award from the Organizational Communication Division of the National Communication Association. Her work focuses on food systems, discourse analysis, and community engagement, and her research has appeared in journals including the Journal of Applied Communication Research and the American Journal of Public Health. LeGreco has also played a key role in organizing the Guilford Food Council, the Mobile Oasis Farmers Market, and the Warnersville Urban Farm all in an effort to promote vibrant local food communities. In both 2014 and 2015, she presented talks for TEDxGreensboro chronicling these experiences.The late H. L. (Bud) Goodall, Jr. (PhD, Penn State) was Professor of Communication in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University, where he also served as a Senior Fellow in the Consortium for Strategic Communication and as an affiliated faculty member in the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict. He was the author or coauthor of many books and articles on organizational and strategic communication, narrative, and ethnography, Counter-Narrative: How Academics Can Challenge Extremists and Promote Social Justice (Left Coast Press, 2010), and with Jeffry Halverson and Steven R. Corman, Master Narratives of Islamist Extremism (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2010). With coauthors Steven R. Corman and Angela Trethewey, their volume Weapons of Mass Persuasion: Strategic Communication to Combat Violent Extremism won the Best Book award from the Applied Communication Division of the National Communication Association in 2009, and his autoethnographic memoir, A Need to Know: The Clandestine History of a CIA Family won the Best Book award from the Ethnography Division of NCA in 2007. Goodall worked as an organizational consultant for over thirty years. His clients included high technology organizations, educational institutions, and U. S. military, intelligence, and diplomatic services. He was listed in Who s Who in the Social Sciences and was the recipient of the Gerald M. Phillips lifetime achievement award in applied communication scholarship from the National Communication Association in 2003.

The book was needed for a college course. So far, what i have learned from it, has be very informational. the only issue i've had, is that some of the information that the test asks, is sporadic. Instead of telling me everything I need to know about and certain act, you have to read two to three chapters to get all of the information.

life", which I believe are subtly different. It would have also been nice to explore a related concept of "what it is like to be me" and the possible influence this would have on the meaning and purpose of life. My personal opinion, as a layman, is that the ultimate meaning/purpose of life is an accumulation of the many interactions each of us has as life progresses. Most are short and evernescent, many are ongoing and deep, some are negative, most hopefully positive and who we are is influenced by the multitude of these inter-personal interactions; similar to the many ongoing interactions between subatomic particles permitting our Universe.

Living wisely

Daniel Klein offers a philosophy course about life and living well for those who wished they had taken one but never got around to it. In his engaging, clear and humorous way Klein takes the reader on a journey through centuries of intellectual challenges, all focused on what great minds have believed make up the good life or life itself. The book consists of "Pithies", short quotes from a wide selection of "great minds" that artfully capture complex concepts. Klein then provides a reason for his choice and gives 3 or 4 short pages of explanation. It works beautifully the first time, and like life, matures on return visits.

Reflect and Savor

This is my third Daniel Klein book and probably the meatiest in terms of discussion.of philosophy and its application to a meaningful life. Kudos to a gentlemen who is at or near the 80 year point and still writing witty, thoughtful and original material. I only took one Philosophy course in college rather than majoring in it as Klein did. It was difficult and delightful. I would say the same about Klein's books-deceptively short and humorous, but worthy of reflection. Food for thought and ammunition for multiple interesting conversations.

Waging War on Complexity Costs book provides the best break down on the components of complexity and how to solve the complexity mantra through various approaches and principles. It makes you really think about how complexity permeates throughout a company both in good and bad forms and what you can do to stop the bleeding. All too often complexity is not fully understood and attempts to reduce it fall flat as people don't consider all the facets across product, process, and organization. This book shows you how the multidimensional pieces work together and how to solve across the spectrum for the biggest benefit vs death by a thousand cuts using a bottoms up approach only focusing on a piece of the puzzle. Excellent read and great application!
