Some gems, some clunkers, overall quite good
By K. Bunker
Funny how marketers seem to have decided that in order to sell a book of erotica, it has to have "for women" in its title. Well I'm a guy, and I not only read this book, but I thought it was pretty good. Does that mean my guy-card is going to be revoked? Anyway, this is a collection of 18 erotic "fairy tale" stories. Some are retellings of classic fairy tales, others merely evocative of the fairy tale genre. Some take place in a contemporary setting, others not. Some begin with "Once upon a time" or "Once there was...", others not. Some use quasi-olde-tyme language, others not. Some are quite well written, others not.

The quality of these tales varies widely, from the plain awful to the remarkably good. I'd say the majority of them are nice little appetizer-sized helpings of cleverness, charm, humor (or melancholy) and sexiness. A few soar above that modest level of success, and a few fall short of it.

"The Obedient Wife" by Delilah Devlin: One of those modestly successful stories. Nicely written, clever and sexy.
"How the Little Mermaid Got Her Tail Back" by Andrea Dale: Rather rambling and unfocused, and while it may seem odd to say this of a story that's a retold fairy tale, its believability is ruined by a glaring hole in the description of a central scene.
"Ducking" by Craig Sorensen: A well-intentioned retelling of The Ugly Duckling, wherein the protagonist comes to realize that she's suffering from a distorted self-image, and in fact is a Total Hottie. Rather unsophisticated writing compared to the better stories in this book, and what are those references to ninjas doing in here?
"Three Times" by Justine Elyot: Charming and funny, with a Happily Ever After lesbian marriage ending.
"Ellie and the Shoemaker" by Louisa Harte: Not bad, but is often awkward and unrealistic in its depiction of the characters' behavior and motivations.
"The Pub Owner's Daughter" by Alegra Verde: Rather clumsily, even ineptly, written. "a thin fellow with almond eyes from the East was chosen." (Yes, but which direction did his nose come from?)
"Sleep Tight" by Janine Ashbless: Probably began its life as a neat little five-page story. Unfortunately someone put it on a rack and brutally stretched it out to eleven pages.
"Her Hair is a Net, Woven" by Shanna Germain: A delightful, mysterious, poetic piece that, from the title onward, uses language exquisately. I only wish I could have figured out what the dang story was.
"Mind your Peas and Qs" by Allison Wonderland: A painfully unfunny, painfully stupid attempt at humor. Filled with lines like "Father chuckles, his eyes crinkling, his pupils twinkling." Ha. Ha. [Barf]
"In the Dark Woods" by Kristina Wright: The best written, most intelligent of the stories in the volume, and coincidentally also the sexiest. Truly a finely crafted story, superficially about an artist having an affair with a married man. Written by Kristina Wright, the editor of this book. Too bad the only other piece of writing that turns up in an Amazon search for this author looks like just an ordinary romance novel.
"Gildi and the Unwieldy, Ineffectual Committee of Bears" by Jeremy Edwards: A clever story with a funny fairy tale connection, reasonably well written and quite sexy.
"Frosted Glass" by Aurelia T. Evans: A lovely, melancholy story about the loss of love. "[The Snow Queen] told me that I could have warmth and die, or I could freeze and cease to live."
"Gingerbread Man" by Carol Hassler: A very nice story, sort of a ghost story with a cinnamon-flavored twist.
"All in a Day's Work" by Saskia Walker: A nice little piece about a magical dominatrix. Well done, but the magical element is quite superfluous to the story.
"Big Bad Wolf" by Alana Noël Voth: Distractingly written in the present tense and a little amateurish. "The wolf regards him beneath the awning in his boxer shorts..." Funny, I would have expected a wolf to wear briefs.
"The Kiss" by Michelle Augello-Page: Written in a highly stylized manner that I found pretentious and off-putting. Others might find it artistic or some such.
"The Return": By Charlotte Stein. A close second for my choice as best story in the book. Wonderfully artistic writing, beautifully evocative in its renditions of mood, emotions and steamy sex. Unfortunately the last few paragraphs puncture the mysterious, magical mood of the story by providing a prosaic (and hugely unlikely) explanation.
"The Stone Room" by A.D.R. Forte: In a fantastical setting, a man finds bliss at the receiving end of a BDSM relationship. "She kept his heart fast, bound with brambles that made him bleed and sigh." Nicely done.

Very Hot book but not what I expected
By Steph
Fairy Tale Lust is an anthology of short erotic and semi paranormal stories. I had high expectations for this book because I really enjoy books by Angela Knight and thought this book would have stories with a similar style. (But I discovered that Angela Knight does not have a story in this book and only writes the forward.) Warning: Even if you like your books a little racy I must repeat these shorts are NOT for the 'vanilla' romance reader.

As mentioned earlier, these stories are not what I expected. Most of the stories are set in modern times and loosely have a sort of fairy tale twist. I thought the stories would be based on common fairy tales set more in a `fantasy' world. (I think, Enchanted: Erotic Bedtime Stories For Women by Nancy Madore did a better job of fairy tale erotic romances) Because of this I felt the shorts were not as interesting as I thought they could be especially since the stories were very short stories and therefore the plots are not very complex.

I think if you are looking for vignettes that are kinky (shocking and titillating) and for the most part set in modern times, then you will enjoy this book. But if you expect stories that really follow a fairy tale theme and have more a plot this book may disappoint. (Although there are a few which do such as a Beauty and the Beast type story by Delilah Devlin.) Because I like the emotional connection between 2 characters and these shorts were brief. I couldn't get into the stories as much as I hoped. But if you are just looking for some inventive and erotic sex stories that are quick `flings' then this book will satisfy.

Fun, sexy anthology with a range of genres and voices
By Hedera Femme
While the criticism from other reviewers that this book contains no one particular type of erotica is correct: the selection of stories is as fun as it is varied with no emphasis on one style. Readers looking for a specific genre of erotica may be disappointed for the most part when they see their preferred type only once or twice, so consider the book to be a sampling of different voices and predilections with more of a focus on the reworking of fairy tale themes; if the attitude is to enjoy the stories from that perspective, then this book is wonderful!
None of the stories are really hard-core, and while some toy with less mainstream sexualities, none fully delve into that. Because each story is so different, this is a great starting point to finding authors you like, so it's a great starting point into erotica.

The best way for me to review this is to give a little hint of what each story contains, so hopefully that will give you an idea of what to expect and whether or not you want to buy this naughty little read:

The Obedient Wife
Somewhat of a period style, but not quite as far as "ye olde storie", this is about a poor miller with a beautiful daughter who wishes to get the most money from marrying her off. She finds other ways to make her own money on the side while technically maintaining her virginity until the right man proves not only the highest bidder, but something of a beast (literally). Elements of light domination and fairy-tale bestiality (think Beauty of the Beast, not a donkey show). Well-written and a good story in its own right.

How the Little Mermaid Got Her Tail Back
Story of female submission with a touch of kink involving costume play with, you got it, a mermaid outfit. Ok story. Modern tone.

Ducking
A story of the sexual awakening of a woman in her 40's, "Ducking" had a very empowering feel that goes against much of our society's double standard that mocks the so-called "cougar". Great moral to the story with a strong central character finding what she wants, even if a little later in life. Modern feel with a feminist undertone and "take what you want" attitude. Loved it!

Three Times
Set in a vaguely medieval/renaissance period, this is a sort of sleeping beauty/enchanted princess story with the focus on freeing her from a curse. Girl-on-girl focus with some other things (and a man) thrown in the mix, and told in a similar tone as traditional fairy tales, which is charming way to deliver stories. Short and sweet.

Ellie and the Shoemaker
Though the setting and feel is modern, it has a distinctly fairy-tale quality to it that felt refreshing and inventive. Set in Britain (from the subtle language differences), the story is of a young woman who finds temporary work under a shoe cobbler who laboriously crafts high quality, though lackluster shoes by hand. In exchange for the room upstairs and a humble salary, she takes in interest in him immediately, though being too shy to approach him, finds ways to express her affection while playing the part of shoe-fairy, anonymously crafting sexy shoes that boost the business. Sexually pretty straightforward with the hint of a shoe fetish, but not much emphasis on that (oddly enough). Very well-written with a fun story!

The Pub Owner's Daughter
Another story set in a vaguely medieval/renaissance period, this does have some of that "ye olde storie" feel, but not in an overly hokey way. The pub owner's daughter is given the freedom to seek a man who will give her "release", and as she picks one man each week, she cannot quite find him until the end. Some femdom elements, but nothing super hard-core.

Sleep Tight
A maintenance man/groundskeeper has to work on an old abandoned house and finds something unexpected inside. Some supernatural ghost-story type stuff, but nothing overtly worked into the story. Builds up to something, that as it turns out, doesn't quite live up. Not the best one in the book, but ok and fun.

Her Hair is a Net, Woven
Like sleep tight, there are some supernatural elements and a sense of mystery. Also like Sleep Tight, there is a build to something that feels a little disappointing and somewhat vague, though the journey there is amusing enough. Pretty straightforward, sexually speaking, though they are in the water.

Mind Your Peas and Q's
A reversal of the princess and the pea with some slight femdom elements within otherwise vanilla sex. Ambiguous time period with quirky modern stuff within a sense of period. Interesting voice, ok story, and fun overall.

In the Dark Woods
Interesting story of an affair with subtle themes discussing and questioning established religion and morality. Passion as the sacred, fidelity to desire, there are also some allusions to the supernatural, but nothing is really confirmed as such. The story is intellectually provocative, though not overly so, and is well-written and interesting.

Gildy and the Unwieldy, Ineffectual Committee of Bears
Set in a frat house, a young female rocker to play for an event is just looking for a place to sleep. Well not sleep, technically. To get off. Like Goldilocks, she struggles to find that place with those relatively useless boys providing little help. Basically a masturbation story. Ok, but nothing spectacular, the reader shares the protagonists frustration without the satisfaction.

Frosted Glass
Set some time in the past in an icy clime, the story revolves around having one's heart stolen by the Snow Queen. Odd, meandering story with an unhappy marriage and an unhappy woman, some supernatural themes, and mostly vague girl-on-girl sexuality. Ok, but not the best one in the book.

Gingerbread Man
Story of loss, resurrection, the threat of loss again, and ... well, I can't ruin it for you. It has a melancholy, nostalgic feel for the most part but is emotionally compelling. Modern with fantastical feel, well-written, and unconventionally interesting. There's some pun here about vanilla/gingerbread sex.

All In a Day's Work
Femdom set in an office with some fairy tale elements. Short, sweet, and cute.

Big Bad Wolf
Modern setting with a reversal on the traditionally male beast. Sweet and earthy with a happy ending.

The Kiss
Story of a supernatural body thief who uses sex to take his or her new body. Interesting, though not entirely a new concept.

The Return
Very well-written story that stands on its own merits, the author builds tension and suspense when the husband, returning home, is not himself. The wife, filled with fear and apprehension, is at the same time relieved not to see the same man she long ago fell out of love with. Some elements of darker sexuality and fear, but nothing heavy-handed or obvious. Great story!

The Stone Room
Femdom set in a vaguely medieval/renaissance period with an arrogant womanizing prince as the protagonist, and a wily enchantress and her assistant, a giant, who train him to the path of submission and what he has been really seeking in his many exploits. Some man-on-man/giant with a focus on the protagonists submission.

Attention Grown-Ups: This is great material!!! Please read it!
By Robert J. Rubel
The Truth About Sex, A Sex Primer for the 21st Century
Volume 2: Sex for Grown-Ups by
 Dr. Gloria G. Brame

Review by Robert Rubel, Ph.D. (Dr. Bob)

As the author of: [...], I can tell you with certainty, Dr. Brame has done it again and written another book filled with great, concise summaries/conclusions about what sex is and is not for "Grown-Ups". Her book is a must-read for those of us who intellectualize sex - her phrase. I recognize how vital it is to have a clear understanding of your partners (or partners) sexual needs and how important it is to have a healthy, diverse, and fulfilling sex life: a healthy sex life fosters relationship stability and improves your personal wellbeing.

Dr. Brame's book explains that sex is experiential, not intellectual, and that you should be seeking a relationship that affirms all partners' needs. She describes how your sex life should include enough variety to keep both partners excited - and then provides some ideas about what "variety" might look like for you. She also cautions that you and your partner should maintain a shared or compatible sexual self-identity that includes compatible sexual personalities. In the end, for a healthy, sexually compatible relationship, Dr. Brame notes that all sexually-involved parties should be satisfied with whatever sexual path you take.

Here are some highlights concerning sexual stability in a relationship, taken from The Truth About Sex, A Sex Primer for the 21st Century Volume 2: Sex for Grown-Ups by
Dr. Gloria G. Brame stresses these points:

* If you can't be emotionally naked, if you can't tell your sex partner your secrets, if you're too angry to tolerate each other, the chances of a fulfilling sex life are virtually nil.
* Sex reaffirms the romantic bond. We can tap its potential to build deeper and more lasting commitments. Romantic love is a by-product of the sex chemicals in our brains.
* When people reach the point in a relationship where they avoid sex with their partner, more often than not it's one of two things: either that they have fallen out of love with their partner or the type of sex they are having is awkward and dissatisfying.
* While penetration is important to some women, even those who love it the most still want to feel held, kissed, and handled during the sex act, and not just penetrated.
* Secrets destroy otherwise supportive, respectful, loving relationships. There is an intense brain chemistry that flows when partners are joined together uniquely by mutual trust and mutual lust.
* The longer you are with someone, the more ways you should know how to turn them on and get them off.

Here are some highlights concerning healthy personal sexual identity, taken from The Truth About Sex, A Sex Primer for the 21st Century Volume 2: Sex for Grown-Ups by
Dr. Gloria G. Brame stresses these points:
* One's sexuality is strongly influenced by how we feel about ourselves. People with good self-esteem feel entitled to sexual pleasure in bed and seek it out on their own terms.
* When we believe what society tells us we're supposed to be sexually and that clashes with who we think we are, it can lead to sexual identity crisis.
* Building a positive new sexual feedback loop makes the connection between sex and joy. The more positive experiences you have, the more confidence you build about your ability to perform well in bed.

Here are some highlights concerning "stepping out of our sexual safety box", taken from The Truth About Sex, A Sex Primer for the 21st Century Volume 2: Sex for Grown-Ups by
Dr. Gloria G. Brame stresses these points:
* By adulthood, a fetishist finds it increasingly hard to feel fully satisfied unless there is some fetish activity in their intimacy.
* It's common for all people to lose interest in sex when the kind of sex they have is not giving them the kind of fulfillment their brains crave. For men, this may also lead to impotence, difficulty maintaining erections, and penile dissociation.
* I find it grim how many adults are inexperienced or clumsy with sex and how many limit themselves to a tiny, sometimes monotonous repertoire of sex acts... obsesses so much over toys that he or she never learns the basics of orgasmic sex, acquiring basic techniques for giving and getting sexual pleasure
* Emerging research suggests that simply having good sex with someone for a long period of time may alter our internal biology sufficiently to make us want to stay monogamous.
* Like the rest of your life, if your sex life doesn't grow it will stagnate.

I'll end this review by totally endorsing Dr. Brame's book and her observations that fulfilling sex right involves all five senses. Sex isn't just about your lips and genitals, it is a full-body buffet of delights. Slow down to listen to the sounds your partners make; touch them all over; taste their skin with your lips and tongue; look at them all over without shame; inhale their natural odors.

And, have fun.

The new book!!
By Jambi
Gloria Brame's latest book, "The Truth About Sex, A Sex Primer For The 21st
Century Volume II: Sex For Grown-Ups," is yet another stunning victory, both
for Dr. Brame, and for anyone who reads it. One of her many strengths is
that as a therapist, she writes for everyone: the seasoned kink scene
player, the "vanilla" sexual person just curious about variations in sex and
techniques, or anyone in between. In her books, there is no "too-cool"
person, waiting at the door to show you out---only a warm, intelligent and
knowledgeable person to welcome you in: Dr. Brame. Her major point in this
particular book is this: deviation from "the norm" is the new normal. Our
sexual definitions heretofore were decided wrongly from the Victorian age
and repeated and preached badly for years, until now. She strives to make
knowledge-seeking people aware of this, to cut down the barriers to free and
healthy thinking about all things sexual, and to make people aware of the
real health benefits of good sex and masturbation. This is a page-turner!
There are dungeons and drag queens here, sure, but there is much more. Treat
yourself to Gloria's Mind.

You Totally Need A Sex Make-Over!
By Jada A. Washington
I was luckily provided with an author's copy of this book to review. Now, thank your sex life that I was there to help.

My deflowering sucked. I mean, I wish I could give you some magical, romantic tale about it. But, it was an eye-opening experience that really made me question the whole idea of having sexual intercourse. It wasn't until my mid-20's, following the birth of my child, that I really felt sexually liberated. Imagine a bunch of strangers staring at your naughty bits, seeing you secrete bodily fluids that only ooze out in your bathroom. After that, I thought there was nothing to be ashamed of. Childbirth definitely gave me a freedom that counteracted the cultural and religious ideologies I'd been taught growing up in the South. And, I felt confident that at some point I'd meet someone who shared the same values. Then, the 30's happened.

I began to think I was some freak of nature who was cursed in the intimacy department. But this book, this wonderful manual of all things sex-amazing, changed this. I won't go into my kinks, whether I like spankings, or my preferred gender of love. But, I will tell you that this book made me feel good. How often do you read something that makes you feel good about sexual choices you've made past, present, and future? Me? Not often. Hey, born-again Christian here. I was taught there was happiness--Sodom and Gomorrah happiness. And then there's Hell--where all the harlots and Jezebels who want non-traditional sex that doesn't lead to procreation go to burn. Jezebel Hell. I'm practical enough to know that I'm going to no such place. But if I did, I am now comforted that I wouldn't be alone. Ha ha ha! I'm just kidding.

Dr. Brame is so freaking awesome. If I wasn't so far away, she'd definitely be one of my therapists because I've got some issues to work out. In the meantime, her book has done me wonders. Up until this point, I've only credited two works of non-fiction as positive influences in my sexual identity. The first is "The Cult of Womanhood" by Marlene LeGates. The other is A Heroine's Journey by Maureen Murdock. (Isn't it cool how both of them have "M" names? So weird!) Now, I have Gloria Brame. (I'm totally counting the "mmmmm" in Brame, creating my triumvirate of groundbreaking, M-named ladies).

Dr. Brame's world is sort of like the Island of Misfit Toys. When you saw those poor playthings on that old school Christmas special, you really felt something for them. It is possible that you actually started to reflect on how these toys related to you. Was it you who wanted to be Joy-In-The-Box when society made you be a Jack-In-The-Box? This is what many of you might feel if you read this book. The topics discussed totally relate to you in your river of denial in Egypt. At first, it's like viewing a make-over show where the participants must let go of an outdated style to embrace something more personal and more contemporary. It is easy to think you're so hip that this would never happen to you. But, a quick review of your closet brings the truth to the surface--you totally need a make-over. If you're in dire need of a sexual makeover, please buy this book. Nobody is promising an orgasm. But, there might be an orgasm, possibly more orgasms. Why are you still reading this review?

Review
Mira Tweti and Lisa Brady have produced a masterpiece for children, combining factual information and animal welfare issues with storytelling and fabulous illustrations. HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE takes us on a fascinating journey. Parents and teachers will learn as much as children and be just as enchanted. I highly recommend this book as a gift, as a necessary addition to libraries, and in schools and homes. Please share your copy with as many friends as you can, and encourage them to buy their own! --Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE - Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace

HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE is an important book that introduces children to the world of parrots in an entertaining way and enlightens them to important animal welfare issues regarding pet birds. --Wayne Pacelle - President & CEO The Humane Society of the United States

In HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE, Mira Tweti has done for parrots what Diane Leigh and Marilee Geyer did in their groundbreaking "One at a Time," about a week in the life of a California animal shelter. Tweti has given us pause, and written what should be required reading… --Maryanne Dell - Orange County Register Pet Reporter

Great book to share with a child...
By mefids
I can not say enough good things about this book. It teaches us that parrots are very social creatures that are best left to live in flocks in the wild. The story is written so that a child can enjoy and understand it. The illustrations are breathtakingly beautiful.

After the story is told, the author includes information on parrots as well as things we can do to help protect them. The two stories about former pet parrots now living in rescues brought tears to my eyes.

It is also important to note that the author went the extra mile to have this book printed on paper that is made from 10% flax, 40% recycled post comsumer waste, and 50% sustainably harvested trees. Many books are printed on paper made from Indonesian ranforest trees; contributing to the destruction of the parrots native habitat.

Kudos to Myra Tweti for an excellent family-friendly and eco-friendly book!

Learned about parrots, but in a fun way
By Lisa Kremer
I read 'Here, There and Everywhere' to my 4-year-old daughter and she loved it -- we both did. Sreeeet is a lorikeet who is captured and taken from his home and family and ends up with an apartment-dwelling family in New York. The story, told from Sreeeet's point of view, explains why parrots are unhappy in captivity, and why they behave the way they do when trapped. My daughter and I learned about something we see every day -- the brightly colored parrots in the neighborhood pet store. They are no longer just another animal to look at and then walk by. In addition, this is just a good story. We laughed at the funny parts, swooned at the beautiful parts, and couldn't wait to see how it ended. My daughter asked me to please read it to her again the next night, and I did.

Don't miss this fabulous children's book
By Carol C. Anderon
When I bought my first copy and read it with my niece who is 10, she loved it and both of us were amazed at the beautiful artwork. This book is not a fantasy book, it's about a group of parrots, one of whom is trapped in the wild and taken for sale to another country but eventually winds his way back home. It gives children a taste of the problems encountered in the illegal wild bird trade which is an important dose of reality. I was so impressed I bought a second copy for my grandchildren, ages 5 and 10, and I highly recommend this book to anyone. It is beautifully done and educational at the same time.

An excellent book from one of the legends of early karate in America. Bill Wallace was known for his fantastic kicks.
By Joseph J. Truncale
Anyone who has been involved in karate and the martial arts since the early 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s remembers the pioneers in the American martial arts scene. One of these is Bill “Superfoot” Wallace. He along with Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, Rorian Gracie and numerous others paved the way for those practicing today. I recently purchased this 190 page soft cover (Dynamic Stretching and Kicking by Bill “ Superfoot” Wallace) book. Even though it was published in 1982 the vast majority of information is timeless and still valid today.

The large formatted volume is organized into two parts. Part one covers anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology of flexibility. Other topics include major muscle groups, benefits of flexibility, how to stretch, warm up exercises, upper body exercises, lower body exercises, balance exercises and footwork exercises. The second part focuses on Bill Wallace’s unique style of kicking, combinations, using hand techniques to set up kicks, distancing, single kicks, defensive kicks, and jamming.

This very informative and interesting book is for anyone who wants to improve their flexibility and kicking skills. I personally think this book is a classic by one of the most talented karate and kickboxing pioneers in the early years of American Karate. The black and white photographs are clear and easy to follow; however, to get the most out of this text one should combine it with actual hands on instruction by a karate instructor.

Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Shotokan Karate Self-Defense Techniques: Combat karate for the street).

The written portion on his kicking method is very well done and the pictures are great, highlighting correct and incorrect ways
By Shannon Jakul
I was impressed with this work. The stretching details of Grandmaster Wallace's routine is well explained with why and how you should do certain stretches. The written portion on his kicking method is very well done and the pictures are great, highlighting correct and incorrect ways. It highlighted things I hadn't picked up from attending Bill's seminars or his instructional video series from Panther Productions. Highly recommend for any fan of his or student of karate and kickboxing.

This is a good book on flexibility
By Marc Maston
This is a good book on flexibility. I have since purchased a copy of one of his video series. As one could expect, there is a lot more detail and explanation of the techniques and muscle relaxation in the videos than the book written sometime ago. My recommendation, go for the video.

'Cryptographic Protocol: Security Analysis Based on Trusted Freshness' mainly discusses how to analyze and design cryptographic protocols based on the idea of system engineering and that of the trusted freshness component. A novel freshness principle based on the trusted freshness component is presented; this principle is the basis for an efficient and easy method for analyzing the security of cryptographic protocols. The reasoning results of the new approach, when compared with the security conditions, can either establish the correctness of a cryptographic protocol when the protocol is in fact correct, or identify the absence of the security properties, which leads the structure to construct attacks directly. Furthermore, based on the freshness principle, a belief multiset formalism is presented. This formalism’s efficiency, rigorousness, and the possibility of its automation are also presented.
The book is intended for researchers, engineers, and graduate students in the fields of communication, computer science and cryptography, and will be especially useful for engineers who need to analyze cryptographic protocols in the real world.
Dr. Ling Dong is a senior engineer in the network construction and information security field. Dr. Kefei Chen is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

4-Minute Fit: The Metabolism Accelerator for the Time Crunched, Deskbound, and Stressed-Out, by Siphiwe Baleka, Jon Wertheim

From Yale-educated truck driver and fitness guru Siphiwe Baleka, a revolutionary metabolism-spiking program for anyone who feels they don’t have enough time, equipment, or money to get in shape and lose those extra pounds.

When Siphiwe Baleka, who had once been a NCAA Division I athlete, began truck driving in 2008, his whole lifestyle changed. Within weeks his metabolism slowed drastically and he gained ten percent of his body weight. He knew he needed to take back control of his health and wellbeing and change the sedentary lifestyle of truck driving—one of the country’s least healthy industries.

Now, Baleka, founder of Fitness Trucking and full-time fitness coach for Prime Inc., one of the nation’s largest trucking companies—and now one of the healthiest—helps thousands of Prime’s long-haul truck drivers, who have also struggled with weight and health problems, with his 13-week nutrition and exercise plan.

Combining step-by-step workouts and advice on healthy eating (even on the go), 4-Minute Fit is a flexible, yet powerful plan that is proven to boost your metabolism, provide results, and help you get rid of those extra pounds and reach your weight loss goals. Baleka’s program is geared not only for those who drive eighteen-wheelers, but also for anyone who travels for work, has a job that involves a lot of sitting, or doesn’t think they have enough time to exercise and eat better. If you’re frustrated by the weight gain that comes from not being active enough due to your job or lifestyle, 4-Minute Fit is the simple new guide that can radically change your life.

4-Minute Fit

My Personal Weight-Loss Journey
No life-improvement plan is going to be effective for you unless you believe in it, and one of the keys to believing in a system is holding trust in the leader. A sports team that doesn’t have faith in the coach is in trouble. Same for the company whose employees are skeptical of the CEO. So before we get started, let me tell you a little about me and the strange path that led me from Yale University to the life of a truck driver.

Just about every trucker has a rich backstory. You see, truckers come in all shapes and sizes, all shades and age groups. We come from all over America and beyond, from small towns for sure, but also from cities. We’re men and we’re also women. We’re married and divorced, straight and gay, grandmothers in their sixties and bachelors in their twenties. We come from all different kinds of education levels, hold a wide array of political and religious values, and enjoy a diverse pool of interests outside of work.

For a guy like me who’s hopelessly, incurably outgoing, this diversity is one of the great pluses of the job. I love this aspect. One day you’re talking to a Native American from New Mexico who’s telling you about his tribal rituals; the next day you’re talking with a former hippie from Maine who writes poetry whenever her motor is turned off.

My story? I’ve had a lot of adventures. I’ve been to dozens of foreign countries under all sorts of different circumstances. I went to college at Yale but have worked with street gangs in Chicago and been part of the squatters’ movement in Europe.

There’s been love and loss and lots of passion. There’s been uncertainty—times when I haven’t been sure where I was going to sleep or how I was going to eat. There have been triumphs—from becoming the first African American to be named an All-Ivy League swimmer, to being named America’s Fittest Trucker. And like you, I’ve had my share of disappointments as well.

My birth name was Anthony Blake. I grew up in the far west suburbs of Chicago, a patch of heartland suburbia built on the fields of a long-fallow farm. My parents split up when I was a young boy, and I was the rare African American kid who was brought up by a single father.

Like an omnivore that eats everything, as a kid, I played all sports. There was always a ball or mitt or tennis racket attached to my arm. But I took a particular interest in swimming. I wasn’t big or even graceful, but I loved technique, finding little ways to improve, always tinkering to uncover tricks that could make me faster and more efficient. I loved to compete and test myself against others who were also trying their hardest. By age ten, I was an Illinois state champion in swimming. As a teenager I had a national ranking.

An uncle of mine by marriage, Hayes Jones, had won a gold medal in hurdling in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. I talked to him once about all that he had achieved in sports and what he had to do to get there. I remember that I didn’t come away awed or feeling like I had been talking to a superhero. I came away thinking, Well, hey, he did it. Why not me, too?

I had always done well in school academically, and so I was fortunate that when it was time to pick a college I had plenty of choices. I settled on Yale, largely for the swimming program. Yale had once been an absolute swimming powerhouse, winning four NCAA titles over eleven years.

Unfortunately, that span was from 1942 to 1953. (In fact, under Coach Robert J. H. Kiphuth, Yale had 528 wins and just 12 losses during those eleven years, for the greatest collegiate winning percentage of any sports team in history.) But I arrived on campus full of optimism, convinced that I could help the program get back to greatness and excited about working under Yale’s terrific longtime coach, Frank Keefe.

Since my early childhood, I’ve always liked going against convention. I didn’t rebel for the sake of rebelling, but I never minded being different. And my time at Yale just highlighted that fact. I didn’t mind that most of the best swimmers were from California and Florida, and here I was, from the guts of Illinois. Or that most other swimmers, including my teammates, were tall and lanky and classically built, while I was just 5 foot 8 and maybe 140 pounds, soaking wet. While swimmers were supposed to specialize in a single event, I was a generalist, who swam sprints but also swam long distances. I wasn’t going to worry about whether I fit in; I was going to trust my work ethic and my techniques and my desire and drive to succeed.

At the time, there had yet to be an African American swimmer in the Olympics, and there was still a great deal of mindless prejudice against African Americans in the sport. One of the most memorable moments of my teenage years came when a baseball executive named Al Campanis went on national television and, without a trace of embarrassment or self-consciousness, said, “Why are black men, or black people, not good swimmers? Because they don’t have the buoyancy.”

If that’s the way most of America thought of black people, well, I was going to change all that.

Early in my freshman year at Yale, I was placed in a pool lane with a senior, Andrew Geller, who was the best swimmer on the team. Frustrated that he wasn’t swimming fast enough for my liking, I passed him, which was considered poor pool etiquette, especially for an incoming freshman. He was furious and let me know it. I shot back, “I don’t care who you are, if you aren’t going fast enough, I’m going in front of you.” That pretty much summed up who I was at the time.

By my sophomore year, I had placed fifth in the Eastern Seaboard Swim Championships and made the all-conference team, becoming the first African American swimmer ever to be named to the All-Ivy League team. That year Yale finished 10–3. My junior season, the team was 9–1.

And then my life took a sharp turn. I went to the US Open meet, my opportunity to qualify for the US Olympic Trials in the 100-meter freestyle event. Looking back, I might have been a long shot. But failure hadn’t really crossed my mind. It rarely did back then. This was just something I needed to do before I could make the US Olympic team.

Except that my expectations outstripped my abilities. Well, you can guess what happened: I missed qualifying for the Olympic Trials by less than a second. Eight-tenths of a second, to be exact, or about as much time as it takes to read the words eight tenths.

I knew that this had been my one chance for the Olympics, and it wasn’t going to happen. There was no arguing, no do-overs, no one I could appeal to. The data—in this case, the electronic timer—had said that I had failed. I remember standing in the cool-down pool in Minneapolis and crying, my tears mixing with the chlorinated pool water. I was crying over a dream that had died. But I was also crying for something bigger: my attitude, competitive streak, and technique simply hadn’t been enough to get me through.

I returned to Yale for my senior year, but I didn’t want to swim anymore. The quest was over, and I was heartbroken. So much so that one evening, a few of my roommates found me passed out near a bottle of pills, and I spent a few days in the psych ward of Yale–New Haven Hospital. It was the first time I had really wanted something and didn’t accomplish it. And that was a shock to the system. I wasn’t released until I could convince the doctors I wasn’t a danger to myself.

As part of my recovery program, I got back in the pool and started swimming again. Late in my senior year, I helped Yale win a share of the Ivy League title for the first time in years. That was on a Saturday night. On Monday morning, I was gone.

Graduation was only a few weeks away, and I was in good academic standing. But I felt like I had gotten all I could out of school. I was tired of reading about Jesus and Buddha and all these other spiritual luminaries who had followed their destinies. I wanted to do it, experience the world for myself. So I hitchhiked home, dropped off some bags, and told my dad what I had done. He was less than pleased, as you might guess, and tried to talk me out of it. But it was too late. I told him, “I’m going to travel the world. I don’t know when I’ll be back, if ever.” And then I headed off.

I spent the next fifteen years traveling, following my heart. I surfed in California and hitchhiked in Europe. I threaded my way from Amsterdam to Prague to Trinidad to Honduras to Togo to Ethiopia. There wasn’t much in the way of a long-term plan or organizing principle, just a deep sense that life needed to be experienced and an unshakable belief that it would all work out.

People often ask me if I ever finished college and got my Yale degree. The answer, I’m happy to say, is yes. It was a goal that I set and—after working harder than I thought—I was able to accomplish. When I was in my mid-twenties, after a few years of wandering, I decided to re-enroll. I was so close to graduating that I had to finish, and Yale—which wants as many of its students as possible to finish with a degree—let me back in. One problem: I felt like I couldn’t bother my father with tuition; I had put him through enough. But after paying for classes, I had nothing left to pay for room and board. But I was determined, so I did what I had to do.

I had recently been in Europe and had joined the squatters’ movement there. I thought, Why don’t I try that here? I spent that final semester of college living rent-free in abandoned buildings and in the swim team locker room, eating most of my meals at the local soup kitchens. It was hardly the fun and easy college life that other kids were living. It was the opposite, in fact. But I finally got that degree.

As my thirtieth birthday approached, I decided to go back to Africa. Like a lot of African Americans, I felt as though I didn’t really know my personal history. Connecting with my ancestral heritage became very important to me. I traveled all over the continent, mostly using money I had saved or earning it along the way by making wood furniture. In South Africa, I met with tribal elders. They said that when a son of the soil returns home, he should get a new name. They gave me the name Siphiwe (pronounced seh-PEA-way), a name common among the Xhosa and Zulu tribes. They said it means “Gift of the Creator.” For a last name, they chose Baleka, an anagram of A. Blake. It means “Fast” and “He Who Had Escaped.”

By my mid-thirties, though, I was tired of having no real plan and no real income. I knew I wasn’t cut out for a corporate job. (Besides, I may have had a Yale degree, but to say that my résumé was “nontraditional” was an understatement.) There was essentially a fifteen-year gap in my work history, one that wasn’t going to be easy to explain to a corporate recruiter.

A truck driver friend named Jaberi made a suggestion to me: Drive a truck. It suits your nomadic lifestyle. You got plenty of time to think, and you can save a lot of money. I did what I usually do and said, “Why not? I’ll try it.” I traveled to southern Missouri and enrolled in Prime’s uniquely successful Student Driver Program. I got my commercial driver’s license, spent another four or five months on the road with an instructor-driver, and eventually became a lease operator.

The job fed something in me and suited my personality. The roads are a wilderness, each trip a unique adventure. But, unlike my previous adventures, this one brought steady employment and a plan. I didn’t mind the solitude. And driving triggered this feeling of familiarity. I hadn’t really been in a pool since I’d left Yale, but here I was maneuvering in a lane, reaching a destination, and then returning to where I started in the opposite lane; getting lost inside my head; feeling a sense of independence as I paced myself. The parallels between driving and swimming were hard to miss.

And I liked the unpredictability, too. One week, I’d be hauling flank steak to the West Coast. The next week, I’d be transporting diapers to Miami. You just never knew where you were headed, what part of the country you’d see next, what kind of weather and air you’d be experiencing. But to me, that was all part of the fun. So, too, was gaining an understanding of how important my new job really was. So many of our daily necessities—clothes, food, furniture, medicine—come, literally, off the back of a truck. Drive a truck for a little while, and you soon realize you’re a vital part of the economy. Without truck drivers crisscrossing highways and delivering goods we use every day, this country doesn’t run. It’s that simple.

But here’s what I didn’t like: the changes to my body. For all the adventures I’d had over the years, one of my most vivid moments—a real plot point in my life—came when I realized that I didn’t like how I looked.

In less than two months on the job, I had somehow managed to gain more than 10 percent of my body weight. At that rate, I could come close to doubling my body weight within a year. My energy level was low. It almost felt like I was wearing a costume—one that I couldn’t take off at the end of the day. It wasn’t just that I didn’t like what I saw when I looked in the mirror; it’s that I didn’t even recognize the figure in front of me. Hey, wait a second: This isn’t what I look like. Is it? Really?

Starting to let myself go

This was all a new sensation for me, almost like visiting a foreign country. See, for my entire life, I had put a premium on health and fitness and, yeah, I’ll admit it, on my looks. I had always been an athlete. Over the years, I had struggled with plenty of concerns and challenges. But fitting into my clothes had never been one of them.

Now? All that muscle, originally built up from so many sessions in the weight room and countless nautical miles in the pool, was atrophying. My abs were turning into flab. I lost my beloved six-pack and picked up love handles instead. I even felt my face stretching out and feeling heavier on my neck.

And maybe worse still, there was a real price that came with all this, physically and psychologically. I felt sluggish. My energy was low. I was moody. This unwanted weight gain was affecting everything from my sleep to my sex life.

I looked around and saw my new coworkers. Don’t get me wrong. They were—and are—absolutely fantastic people. But they were also, for the most part, overweight and not on a path to live a long life.

There are 3.5 million truckers in the United States. A full 86 percent of them are overweight, and nearly 70 percent are obese, the highest proportion of any profession in America. A recent Gallup Healthways analysis revealed that transportation workers, including truck drivers, have the highest risk for chronic health problems of any occupation in America. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put long-haul trucking at the top of the list for jobs with the highest rates of obesity. If you wanted to find one profession that embodied the country’s obesity epidemic, this one, sadly, would be it. Trucking is at the heart of this national crisis.

How bad is it? As I write this, the overall life expectancy for the US population is 78.7 years. For truckers who own their own vehicles, it’s 55.7 years; for union drivers, it’s 63 years. Some of this is directly because of the obesity and bad health that runs rampant in the industry. It’s also because of indirect effects. Bad habits, erratic hours, and sleep deprivation lead to the factors that cause fatal traffic accidents on the roads.

Bottom line: I love driving, but not at the expense of my health. And certainly not at the expense of my life.

This low moment was followed by what you might call an aha moment. I was at home watching TV one night, wallowing in my new weight gain, when an infomercial came on. It was for something called the ROM Machine. ROM stands for “range of motion,” and it was a giant contraption that promised the users the benefits of sixty minutes of cardio, thirty minutes of strength training, and twenty minutes of stretching in—get this—a four-minute workout. I was like, Come on, really? Four minutes? This is a joke, right? I’m watching athlete after athlete on the screen—this parade of smiling, buff-looking, muscle-bound guys—get on this machine and say that after four minutes, they’re exhausted. Just dog-tired. It’s the hardest workout they’ve ever done.

As is usually the case with me and infomercials, I’m skeptical. But at the same time, I’m intrigued. A four-minute workout sounds highly questionable, of course. (I mean, that’s half the time of eight-minute abs, and people doubted that.) But what I had seen actually made a lot of sense. The machine is like a sit-down bicycle with your legs out in front of you. But there are also handles, and when you pull them, it’s as though you’re rowing. So it’s like you’re riding a bike and rowing a boat at the same time. And when you get to the extreme end of the motion, you push back the other way, and the resistance changes. So whether you’re pulling or pushing, it’s four minutes of maximum resistance, maximum stretch, maximum range of motion. I’m watching this, and the guy in the commercial is explaining the benefits and all the science behind it. He’s talking about how, when you use a greater range of muscles over a greater range of motion, you circulate more oxygen, which causes more of the metabolic process to produce energy, which requires fat burning. By the end, I’m thinking that, especially as I’m coming to terms with my new weight gain, this machine would sure help me.

Damn, I want a ROM Machine.

There are two problems.

First, the ROM Machine costs $15,000, which I did not have. In fact, I didn’t have much if any money at all at the time. (This is one unfortunate consequence of spending so much of your twenties and early thirties following your bliss.) If it had cost $1.50, I might have needed an installment plan. And second, I am a truck driver, putting thousands of miles on my odometer each week. I can’t exactly carry this machine onto my truck.

But I was impressed, and I was inspired. I wasn’t going to buy a silly ROM Machine from an infomercial. I started researching the principles behind it. There had to be a way I could start burning fat and shedding all this extra weight without a traditional gym. What I discovered: there was a lot of research supporting the idea that a short burst of intense exercise had the same—and sometimes even more—benefits than longer workouts. This came at a time savings, a cost savings, and a reduction in the risk for injury.

Looking back, I see this was the beginning of 4-Minute Fit.

At first there was a lot of trial and even more error. I tried doing exercises that had helped me back when I was swimming competitively—push-ups, sit-ups—but haphazardly, with no plan, no system. I’d pull over at a truck stop or a parking lot, climb out of the cab, get out a piece of cardboard and, right there alongside my truck, get to it. In the beginning, some drivers laughed at me and what I was doing. That was nothing new. Other drivers would say they were looking to lose weight too or that they had once been athletic before their bodies got away from them. But no one asked to join. It was as though they had resigned themselves to being overweight.

Meanwhile, I was determined to lose this weight, but the results weren’t coming. At least not fast enough.

Next, I started bringing different types of equipment on the road with me: resistance bands and kettlebells and a weighted vest. Again, it felt good to exercise and sweat a little and get my pulse rate up. But I wasn’t seeing the results that I wanted.

Then I tried to get to the next level by experimenting with different exercise programs that were trendy at the time. I did Zumba and P90X and Tae Bo and GSP Rushfit. I would try the DVDs, which wasn’t always easy on the road. I’d park the truck on a flat surface and then set up the DVD player so the sun wouldn’t create a glare. I would change into workout clothes, connect the DVD to an external speaker so I could hear, and then get in my workout. When I was done, I would have to break everything down, change back into my old clothes, and pack up. My sixty-minute DVD workout was taking more like two hours in total. But I was on a tight schedule—like most of us, including truckers, are—and so I knew that it wasn’t going to be sustainable.

I tinkered with my diet, too. I was vegetarian and then pescatarian. I tried Mediterranean and Paleo. I would see results at first, but then inevitably I would slip and the weight would return. Again, when you’re pressed for time, you’re driving on the interstates, and you’re pulling into unfamiliar towns at irregular hours, it’s hard to keep to one specific diet.

Adding to this was the difficulty of eating well on the “truckers’ grid.” See, when you’re trucking, assigned to maneuver this steel whale, this fifty-some-foot metal tube weighing as much as 80,000 pounds with cargo, you’re mostly staying on interstates. You’re not driving to the upmarket parts of town where stores sell grass-fed meat and organic fruits and vegetables. (Honk if you’ve ever seen a semi parked outside a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s.)

So the challenges I faced were sort of like the challenges we all face, except many times worse. No kitchen, food storage issues . . . If standard diet and fitness plans weren’t effective for most of the American population, they certainly weren’t going to work for me and my coworkers. I needed something new, a plan that was completely different.
THE START OF A REVOLUTION
Finally, I diagnosed the issue. The problem was one of metabolism. Truck drivers are prime candidates for metabolic syndrome, the medical term for a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity that puts you at greater risk of heart disease, stroke, and other conditions affecting blood vessels. If I could figure out a way to boost metabolism while keeping workouts really short (to fit into the hectic schedule) and making eating simple (to compensate for the long hours and shortage of optimal food choices), not only could I change my body, but I could help the men and women who shared the road with me.

A slowing metabolism is the main driver of weight gain for most of us, and among truckers, the problem is even more exaggerated, thanks to our unpredictable schedules. The freight dictates when truckers drive. Sometimes that means driving at night, and sometimes it means driving in the day. It is the rare driver who gets more than six hours of uninterrupted sleep, and it all disrupts circadian rhythms and the natural biological clock. Sleep deprivation accumulates every day, every week, every month, every year that you drive.

And sleep is a major driver of metabolism. The hormones that regulate metabolism—leptin and ghrelin, which control appetite; insulin and adiponectin, which oversee fat storage; human growth factor, which manages muscle; and cortisol and glucagon, which control energy expenditure—are either produced in your sleep or regulated by your sleep patterns. This is a production cycle that is constantly changing and constantly interrupted for truckers. They’re not able to produce the hormones properly, so their metabolism doesn’t function the way it is supposed to. Again, a huge problem not just for those of us on the road but for anyone who’s tied to a desk job and at the mercy of the alarm clock.

But if getting more sleep wasn’t an option, what if I tinkered with my metabolism while I was awake? What if I exercised in short bursts? And what if I adjusted my diet—cutting back on carbohydrates and strategically timing protein intake every three hours —an eating strategy that would also help my metabolism to spike?

It was then that I remembered the infomercial, you know, the one for the ROM Machine. They claimed that four minutes a day was all you needed to spike your metabolism and set your body into fat-burning mode. What if I could replicate these same principles when I was on the road? I could do the pulling movement with resistance bands, four minutes, as hard as I can in one direction. And then I could do the pushing by turning it around and doing the movement in the opposite direction. So I would get all the upper-body work that this fancy, expensive ROM Machine would give me, but with the cheap, portable equipment I could afford and fit on my truck. I could take resistance bands on the truck, and I could hook them up anywhere—to a roadside tree, to the truck, inside the door, or wherever. It was such a complete workout, incorporating just about every group of muscles and working in stretching. And, even better, I could complete the entire routine in just fifteen minutes—the maximum amount of exercise that one should do, for reasons I’ll explain in an upcoming chapter.

The results were remarkable. Like a snake molting its skin, I shed the excess weight. I worked myself into the best shape of my adult life and—while still driving full time more than 330 days each year—I returned to competitive swimming. In 2011, I won two events at the US Masters Swimming Spring Nationals and went on to compete in eight sprint and Olympic distance triathlons (winning my age group in two of those races), including the USAT Age Group National Championships. I competed in the 2012 Ironman South Africa, finishing in 214th place out of more than 1,300 athletes. This led one industry magazine to give me the honorary title of the “Fittest Truck Driver in America.”

I realized something else: the same principles and program that enabled me, in my early forties, to look like the guy above? They could apply to my truck-driving colleagues, too. In fact, the basic principles apply to just about anyone, whether they’re obese and looking to cut their BMI in half, or already fit adults who simply wanted to elevate to super-fit.

Now, if I can take a group of sedentary, badly nourished, and exhausted truckers, give them no access to a gym, and still strip away enormous amounts of weight while having them exercise just four minutes a day, imagine what I can do for you.

[[VIDEOID:8a48aaaabb50c289ed8df2f2e58f9715]] The reality is that most of us live an unhealthy sedentary lifestyle, but we are too busy to exercise. This book took away the excuses and showed me how ANYONE can accelerate their metabolism in just a few minutes without any special equipment. We all have an extra 4 minutes throughout the day, now we can use that to stay fit. Siphiwe has a great story and an approachable style that encourages you to take action for the future, instead of making you feel ashamed of the past.
