ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 “for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.”
Over a 64-year span, Churchill published over 40 books, many multi-volume definitive accounts of historical events to which he was a witness and participant. All are beautifully written and as accessible and relevant today as when first published.
During his fifty-year political career, Churchill served twice as Prime Minister in addition to other prominent positions—including President of the Board of Trade, First Lord of the Admiralty, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Home Secretary. In the 1930s, Churchill was one of the first to recognize the danger of the rising Nazi power in Germany and to campaign for rearmament in Britain. His leadership and inspired broadcasts and speeches during World War II helped strengthen British resistance to Adolf Hitler—and played an important part in the Allies’ eventual triumph.
One of the most inspiring wartime leaders of modern history, Churchill was also an orator, a historian, a journalist, and an artist. All of these aspects of Churchill are fully represented in this collection of his works.

About the Author
Christopher Lee was the first Quatercentenary Research Fellow at Emmanuel College Cambridge, where he studied the historical influences on modern diplomatic and political processes. His award winning History of Britain, This Sceptr'd Isle, was broadcast during 1995 and 1996 by the BBC. He is currently writing a history of the 20th Century.

The History of the English as seen by Winston

During the 1930's Winston Churchill was enduring his "wilderness years" and was quite prolific in his journalistic efforts. Mr. Churchill began this rather ambitious effort of the history of the English Speaking Peoples in 1937.
This four volume effort wasn't published until the years of 1956-1958. You see Winston had to serve England as Prime Minister from 1939 to 1945. After that he had to write his Nobel Prize winning 6 volume compilation of World War II. During this time Sir Winston was the leader of the Conservative opposition party from 1945 to 1951. After that he again served as Prime Minister until 1955.
Mr. Churchill didn't finish this history of the English Speaking Peoples until he was in his early 80's. One thing about Mr. Churchill, he didn't let any grass grow under his feet.
As a great writer and historian, Mr. Churchill has always had a bias of the English language, laws and its history. Being the master of the English written word, it seems quite right that it was he to write this historical sketch of the English people. Winston goes into great depth of the birth of England and its subsequent development including all the detailed trials and tribulations. He details the narrative of the monarchy into the development of a Democratic form of government.
The rather long history is divided into four books as follows:
1.) The Birth of Britain
2.) The New World
3.) The Age of Revolution
4.) The Great Democracies
Churchill expounds of the development and governance of the British Empire. He also details much of American history, especially the minutiae of the Civil War.
The writing is clear and concise. I think it rather remarkable that these volumes are still relevant today. I took delight in reading Mr. Churchill's last great historical writing. Here's to you Winston. Hear! Hear!!

A Must Read Set

After completing the four volume set of Churchill's History of the English Speaking Peoples, I was struck by not only how easy and interesting the writing was to pour through, but just how diverse, rich and relatively obscure the general knowledge of our history is. The series takes the reader from the raids by the Romans about 250 BCE to the end of the Boer Wars and the cusp of the First World War in 1905 (which, Churchill would dispute - as he calls out the war with France in the 1740-50 time frame as the first truly world war). Exploring the emergence of constitutional monarchy, the English language and laws, modern political thought, the Reformation, and more than a few deeper dives into military campaigns ranging from Caesar to Nelson to Robert E. Lee and Baden-Powell. Churchill's ability to convey 2000 years of history as "his story" and allow it to be a tale rather than an academic history commend this to a broad range of readers. Surprisingly light, this isn't a quick read, but certainly is approachable by almost any reader with interest. A must read.

Nobel Prize Winner

If you were short changed on your history education, like most of us, this is a must read. This is the kind of reading the can make the casual reader, an avid reader of histories. Most people don't know that Churchill had to write to earn a living. Along with his works on the Duke of Marlborough, The World Crisis (WWI) and his 6 volume work on WWII, this series stands out. I covers a lot of ground and leaves you wanting to read more.

I've taught thermo dozens of times out of four textbooks. Koretsky is the book that the students have appreciated the most and with enthusiasm. I'm very excited about the much clearer grasp of the concepts the students have obtained with this book this semester. The writing is very informative and clear, the choice of topics is perfect and the examples are wonderful. Futhermore, the sophistication of the topics is also at a high level, but is approachable for the students, as the concepts are explained so well. Thanks for making thermodynamics so accessible for students!

First edition, but oh well

This text is good for exactly what it claims: the undergraduate. If you're looking for a good general text on thermodynamics that you can use throughout your career (even as a graduate student), this is NOT it. But if you're looking for an easy-to-approach and helpful book that spoon-feeds you the (admitedly difficult the first time) concepts of thermodynamics, this is the text for you. Koretsky himself is upfront about this in the preface. There are a lot of funny errors in this printing (look in the front cover to see that the units for gravitational acceleration are m^2/s and that a m^3 is only 10^-3 L. That would be a LOT of Coke). But hey, even BS&L (the hailed transport phenomena text of chemical engineering) is full of them (if you don't believe me, check out the correngia on Bird's website at U of W). The charts in the back are somewhat complicated to use, at least a lot more than my favorite textbook of all time, Felder and Rosseau's Introduction to Chemical Engineering. In conclusion, good for the confused and undergraduate, of little value to the graduate and practicing.

Great Text. A Realistic Read.

I received my B.S. in chemical engineering (2005) at OSU and studied this text, in part, under Dr. Koretsky. The text was split into two undergraduate courses. I recently entered a PhD program at Texas A&M and reviewed almost the entire text in preparation for the qualifier. The text information was more than sufficient to pass the thermodynamics portion of the test at Texas A&M.

In reviewing some of the other comments, I noticed that there is an indication that the primary problem is a lack of detail. I believe this text has more than enough detail for 99.9% of thermodynamics students. If you know the material in this text, you will have the required thermodynamics background for most graduate courses in chemical engineering. Additionally, you will be ahead of most other graduate students.

I believe the text is excellent because it is clear and practical. It covers, what appears to me, to be the important topics in a clear way. It can be realistically reviewed in its entirety in two undergraduate courses, plus maybe a couple of self study weeks afterward. I reviewed nearly the entire book in about 1 month during the summer before starting graduate school.

Great book!

This is a very nice book for undergraduate thernodynamics. I decided to use it for teaching this class for sophomores. The material es very well presented and developed, with lots of examples. The set of problems at the end of each chapter is also interesting. Definitely a good purchase.

The photography is brilliant, showing the endearing and creepy sides of the robots and roboticists and feeling like stills from unmade science-fiction films. D'Aluisio's interviews are insightful and often very funny, as when she calls MIT superstar Rodney Brooks on his statement that we ought not "overanthropomorphize" people. Brooks is an interesting study. Having shaken up the robotics and artificial-intelligence fields with his elimination of high-level intelligence and dedication to tiny, insectoid, built-from-the-ground-up robots, he now works on large, human-mimicking machines. But hundreds of other researchers, in Japan, Europe, and the United States, are working on various aspects of machine behavior, from the eerily lifelike robotic faces of Fumio Hara and Alvaro Villa to the monkeylike movement of Brachiator III; each of them casts a bit of light on the future of their field in their short interviews. The authors of such award-winning works of photojournalism as Material World: A Global Family Portrait and Women in the Material World, photojournalist Menzel and D'Alusio, a former TV documentary producer, here collect interviews, essays, illustrations, and numerous photographs of all aspects of current research and actual production locations using robots, some of which approach the "intelligent" level. The coverage includes more than 100 different researchers and developers with their robots. Although the actual color photographs were not included, a sample indicates that Menzel's background as a photojournalist stood him in good stead. The interviews are interesting, and the range of applications areas is fascinating; from medicine to housecleaning, from game playing to dancing robots, there is something for everyone in this collection. While some of the resource and source material appendixes were unavailable at the time of review, the authors appear to try to provide enough information so that readers interested in following up a certain avenue will be able to do so. The robots are coming...

In view of the news last week that Kevin Warwick, one of the roboticists talked about in this book, had a chip imbedded permanently under his skin, this book takes on a profound significance. The book includes interviews with some of the major researchers in robotics and artificial intelligence, and has many beautiful photographs. In addition to the news of Warwick's operation, other news of exciting advances in robotics have been reported in the technicial journals and in the news media in recent months. And with the advent of robot toys and a Hollywood movie about artificial intelligence, it seems that robotics has taken us by storm. These developments are indeed exciting, for those working in the field of artificial intelligence, and those that are not, and even though there is perhaps a long way to go before we are priveleged to be among autonomous thinking machines working and playing among us, we are witnessing a good beginning. Indeed we are very lucky to be in a time when the dreams of the researchers in artificial intelligence are finally beginning to be realized, even at a modest level. This book is, thankfully, optimistic in its appraisal of robotics, and as the name of it implies, it has a somewhat different viewpoint on its future. Robots, it contends, will not necessarily be separate independent entities possessing superior intelligence and physical capabilities. By taking on chips underneath their skin, by using hearing aids, by employing heart defibrillators, by reverse engineering the human brain, and by immersing other devices in their bodies, humans will (slowly?) evolve into a superposition of the biological and mechanical. The robots....

Robo sapiens - great title, awful book

The authors traveled a lot to get their interviews but the resulting book is a big disappointment. I got the impression that they were more interested in making some clever photos than producing a good piece of work on the subject of robotics. To be fair, there were a few items of interest but they didn't make the book worthwhile. The format of the book is interviews which makes the reading rather boring, the content disorganized, and any meaningful information very difficult to find. If you are interested in robotics, this book is not for you.

Great book!

This book provides a great review of "who" has/is doing "what" in the robotics field. It provides a sound brief review of the field without too much depth, making it an enjoyable book for readers of all backgrounds. The pictures are great. It is a great book for robotics researchers. I believe it will be a collectors item 20 years from now.

Shall we decline to purchase the collection or shall we purchase it and suppress or destroy those papers relating to Lincoln's paternity?"

To this Ickes quoted Roosevelt as replying, "Purchase the collection and destroy nothing! Whether or not Lincoln was an illegitimate has nothing to do with his greatness!"

Into The Twilight: The True Origins of Abe Lincoln is a dramatization of a story that has existed in the small town of Bostic in the mountains of western North Carolina since Lincoln's birth.

The story says that Lincoln was the son of a wealthy and respected farmer/magistrate, Abraham Enloe, who took Nancy Hanks into his home as a bondservant and later became the father of her child. Enloe was determined that his child would not come into the world as illegitimate so he paid Thomas Lincoln to marry Nancy and take her to Kentucky, far away from Enloe's wife and family.

Since his first foray into politics, theories have abounded about where Abraham Lincoln was actually born . Attempts to prove he was born in Kentucky were thwarted when no record of his birth could be found. The designated birthplace in Kentucky was chosen because a minute record turned up of Thomas Lincoln having worked in the area as a carpenter's helper.

A museum devoted to this subject has been established in Bostic, North Carolina.

An absorbing, fascinating story

Annis Ward Jackson can be depended on to produce a well-written and well-researched story. While I enjoyed her murder mystery "Blind Malice," it is biographies, historical fiction, and memoirs that I favor. Annis's historical fiction "Into The Twilight: The True Origins of Abe Lincoln" has really captivated me with its rich details and descriptions of early US people, their customs and influences. My interest in Abraham Lincoln has increased tremendously.

A Legend Revealed

The legend of the true origins of Abraham Lincoln has existed around North Carolina since his birth. This author takes the legend and weaves it into a very believable story.

Annis Ward Jackson is a great writer. This story is not anything like what I have read in the history books. It tells a completely different story about how Abraham Lincoln was born.

As soon as I finished I had to read more about Abraham Lincoln. One thing I read was that Mr. Lincoln did not attend his father, Tom Lincoln's funeral. Why? That speaks volumes. The photo of Tom Lincoln looks nothing like Abraham Lincoln.

Read this story to see if you believe the history books or the legend.
