About the Author
Thomas Sugrue graduated from Washington and Lee University with Hugh Lynn Cayce, Edgar Cayce’s son. He became a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune and, later, joined the staff at American Magazine. In 1940, his first book, Such Is the Kingdom, was published, followed later by Starling of the White House. At one point in his life , he was struck by a disease that left him partially paralyzed and with little chance of survival. However, he later recovered well enough to become an active swimmer, an improvement due, he believed, to following the readings he received from Edgar Cayce.

This is an a amazing story because it is a true. It starts off a little slow, but picks up as it takes the reader through Cayce's adult life. It is definitely worth the read.

Time to Replace a Tattered Copy

I have and do teach general SEI education in the intermediate grades of urban schools. I bought this book two years ago and have carried it around the classroom so much that I now need to buy a new one. The book outlines concise theoretical explanations and provides very practical instructions for implementing critical literacy in the classroom. I use the techniques frequently during guided reading and also during whole group instructions - with the basal and with literature. Learning to think about text from a critical literacy perspective, my students have consistently grown beyond what is expected of them in the area of reading comprehension. As a result, their outstanding standardized test results have attracted the admiration of my superiors and have allowed me more autonomy to teach how I think best. I highly recommend this book to those teachers who share my experience with high-pressure testing environments in the urban classroom. Learning critical literacy will arm your students against the "hidden curriculum" they will continue to be exposed to in school, and will intensely spark their intellectualism.

Critical, but Useful

I found that the first part of the book where the authors discussed the theory was very abrasive and it turned me off. I probably would not have continued to read the book if it was not an assignment for a graduate class. I ended up taking my own critical stance on a lot of what was said and thinking about how much of the book I wanted to take seriously.

However, when I got to the sections with real lessons as carried out by individual teachers, I thought that the lessons were more practical and useful. I like the children's literature titles that the authors suggest using and found the critical literacy lessons applicable to my students' lives and interests.

Overall, I'd recommend skipping the first part of this book for the teacher who values thinking critically and wants lesson ideas.

Could have been titled Investment for idiots if that wasn't already taken...

The hardest thing about this book was figuring out what was dated and what was current. Things like AOL being cutting edge with stock quotes updated every 15 minutes are obvious, but some of the other things a little less so. However, as an investment newbie, this book was great as it explains things as if they don't expect me to have any previous knowledge. Things like the dogs of the DOW, and how to read a balance sheet, etc. And everything is backed by data showing the results, and the importance of comparing to a baseline such as the S&P 500 over the same period of time.

An interesting but somewhat "fluffy" book about investing

I picked this up because I'd heard that these brothers had written a very interesting and irreverent book and website about investing and money. Basically the book is devided into three parts. The first talks about their "Dow Divident" strategy. Actually, they do give credit to others for coming up with the idea, but add some new tweaks to make it supposedly more profitable. They claim this is a very easy and safe way to invest because you are dealing with only 4 stocks which you will have to change at most once a year and which are all Dow stocks, so they are all large well-established companies that won't go broke any time soon. They claim that this technique would have netted the invester an average of 25% annual growth of the last 25 years, and 19% over the last 38 years, both well above the 10.5% that the market (S&P Index) would have given. They then go on to talk about a way to outdo even this growth by investing in small caps and in shorting stocks. So the 2nd third is about small caps and how to research them, how to read financial statements, how to understand trends, etc. The third section is on shorting stocks. Apparently if you put your money into each of these three philosophies in a certain ratio, you maximize your profits and minimize risk. However, they want you that if you don't have a lot of free time, you should just do the Dow Dividend approach as the other two can eat away a good deal of time and energy. I thought the first section of the book could have been written in about 10 pages, instead of the 100 or so that it took the Gardner brothers. Not only do they go on and on about hypothetical examples, but they also write about what they're about to write about. It's just very repetitive. Perhaps they were trying to be entertaining and trying to ease the complete novice into things, but unless you don't even know the very basics of what stocks are, you will probably get as annoyed with this part of the book as I was. The second part picks up the pace and gets into the nitty-gritty much more so in this sense it's actually useful if you want to make investing a hobby.

informative, if somewhat opinionated

This was the first book I read on picking stocks, and I still refer to it occasionally. It contains some very good information on how to evaluate companies. Some of this information has since been updated on the Motley Fool website, and continues to be. That's one thing I like about their outlook: they are willing to change their approach as they continue to learn. On the downside, I find that they completely rule out some very worthwhile aspects of investing as being worthless. For instance, they have a section in the back of the book which practically compares technical analysis (chart reading) to snake oil. Although I personally would not pick a stock only on the basis of its chart, I must allow that charts help us pick good entry and exit points, and provide other pertinent information as well. One of my favorite investment authors, John Murphy, has an entire book on technical analysis. I regard him as a scholar and a very astute thinker who would never dabble in snake oil.....with resources like Murphy's books out there I can't understand TMF's cavalier dismissal of the entire field. They similarly denigrate the entire field of options and futures, which I think perhaps shows a lack of understanding on their part. Aside from these criticisms, however, I recommend this book as a very good primer on how to evaluate a company you are thinking about investing in.

Arwrology Is A Death Trap of Which The Student Becomes the Master!

Arwrology, originally published by Dr. Gordon E. Perrigard in 1943, is a scientific method of all-out hand-to-hand fighting. Like many of the fighting techniques and systems developed around WWII, Arwrology is a fairly simple system to learn yet contains very effective techniques. Studying Arwrology or any type of military combatives is not for the `dojo martial artist', but for the person who is interested in learning the deadly techniques needed for close combat in war. Nearly all of the techniques of Arwrology reinforce each other so that if one technique happens to fail, another is there to quickly follow up.

Arwrology contains: Psycho-physical calisthenics and hardening exercises, Attack methods, techniques Against a Gun, The Dagger, and defensive techniques. You will learn techniques like the DURA (Duck Under the Right Arm) Throw, the Neck Rope Throw, the Posterior Arwr Lock and the Carotid Artery Arwr Lock. You will study the design of the Arwr Dagger, a double edged dagger, tapering to a needle point and balanced for throwing, and you will learn to use it in combat.

All this and more is contained in Arwrology. The book contains simplified drawings and old photographs (circa 1943) as well as detailed text describing the techniques of Arwrology. Arwrology is a great book for any student of military combatives as well for the martial artist interested in learning combative techniques.

Arwrology by Gordon eric perrigard contains very effective techniques except for the dura throw which is a bit too complicated. I' am interested in subjects like these. This book contains striking techniques and physical calisthenics and hardening exercises and weapon defences. Overall, a good and interesting book to have. I have several books about hand to hand fighting and this is my favourite. But these techniques are dangerous and should only be applied in life threatening situations. I particularly like thr arwr locks. Great book

I had bought the other version from Bob Kasper and after reading it had to purchase this edition from Perrigard. This edition was from the earlier days of Arwrology. I'm sure I will enjoy this edition as well. This will be a great collection at least from the historical perspective. To me it is amazing how these individuals in spite of their background on traditional Japanese systems still were looking for simpler skills to teach and drill on. I recommend this edition for those interested in reading more on this subject.

I first heard about Guru Jagat through a friend, and I am beyond grateful to have been introduced to this exceptional teacher. I have been to yoga classes in the past that made me feel judged, pigeonholed, or somehow inadequate. As the complete opposite of that, Guru Jagat is a breath of fresh air, and a ray of hope for the future of yoga. She is a woman on a mission to make things better for others, whoever they are, whatever their habits may be, despite what they may have done in the past. It is very difficult for me to attend her classes, so I have been looking forward to the release of this book. Invincible Living is a journey into your own personal strength—a strength that Guru Jagat helps you access through her teachings on beauty, sex, healing, diet, wellness, and relationships. I can’t speak for others, but I can say that I feel completely transformed for the better after finding this practice. I cannot remember the last time I felt so excited about a book—probably never. I cannot recommend it enough.

Life changing!

I found Kundalini yoga this year because of Guru Jagat's fantastic method of taking holy teachings and making them so widely accessible and relatable. My previous attempts to familiarize myself with Kundalini felt odd and completely unrelated to my modern life and I soon gave it up. I am now hooked and have seen, in such a little amount of time, the wondrous technology this is. It is proof positive that with the right teacher the skies the limit. This book takes her classes and brings them into your home. Her writing is accessible and fluid and when you're not loving her profound teachings you're loving that she is quick with a joke and doesn't make spiritual seem unattainable. She is the modern Guru this world so desperately needs today.

I was given this book as a gift and I cannot put it down. I am new to kundalini yoga and the author explains the teachings in a very easy to digest manner. After practicing some of the meditations in the book I feel more energized. I feel good. This book has motivated me to amp up my yoga and meditation practice. I am practicing one of the meditations in the book everyday and I am seeing profound changes in my life for the better. A beautiful way to start 2017! This book is a gem!

As a self-described "champion of small uglies," English writer Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) devoted his life to writing and the preservation of wildlife, from the Mauritius pink pigeon to the Rodriques fruit bat. My Family and Other Animals was intended to embrace the natural history of the Greek island of Corfu, but ended up as a delightful account of his family's experiences that were, according to him, "rather like living in one of the more flamboyant and slapstick comic operas."

As a 10-year-old boy, Gerry left England for Corfu with "all those items that I thought necessary to relieve the tedium of a long journey: four books on natural history, a butterfly net, a dog, and a jam-jar full of caterpillars all in imminent danger of turning into chrysalids." Durrell's descriptions of his family and its many eccentric hangers-on (he stresses that "all the anecdotes about the island and the islanders are absolutely true") are highly entertaining, as is the procession of toads, scorpions, geckos, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, the puppies Widdle and Puke, and the Magenpies. This is a lovely book.

Written by the youngest of the Durrell brothers, this gem recreates with fantasy and humor five years of adventure that the family of five (following their early years in India and the death of their father) spent on Corfu before World War II. We see the budding naturalist, who would later become a distinguished figure in animal welfare and conservation as he first discovers, creates and then oversees an idyllic world inhabited by dogs, exotic birds, lizards, snakes and other wildlife. In his escapades young Gerald manages to avoid most formal tutoring and is accompanied by the perfect guide and mentor, an aging Greek father figure who encourages and participates in the mischief that fills these pages. The romps are at times outrageous and past the edge of credibility. But no matter; the fun is shared by all--except for the more famous and judgmental eldest brother, and barely noticed by their sweetly indulgent if also clueless mother. The short chapter called "The Rose-Beetle Man" contains one of the most beguiling and delightful creations to be found anywhere in early 20th century literature.

Corfu Trilogy - a Treat for your literary sense

These stories are incredible and because of them i traveled to Greece four times and painted for weeks on end. The books were written in the 50s, and i thought when i went in the 80s that the people would be different, but they were as he described in the three stories of living on Corfu. The food and music were also as he described . I am collecting first editions of Durrells's books if they have any story about that time just before WWII., for my library and i have introduced his writing to many other people.

Small book but immensely wonderful story

This is one of my all time favorite books. However I was unhappily surprised by the small size of the book and the number of typos. Perhaps I missed the size description when shopping but the typos are inexcusable. All that said I am happy to own a new copy that should last the many re-readings to come.
