From Publishers Weekly
Neill's strong 12th Chicagoland Vampires urban fantasy (after Dark Debt) deftly builds on the heroine's actions and emotional history while introducing new complications into her personal and political worlds. It's been a year since Caroline Evelyn Merit became a vampire, and she has come into her own as Sentinel of Cadogan House, a leader in the Chicago supernatural community, and a capable and likable protagonist. Merit is en route to a Cubs game with her significant other, master vampire Ethan Sullivan, and their friends when they make an alarming discovery: the body of a shape-shifter who's clearly been murdered by a vampire, near a construct of mysterious alchemy symbols. Merit engages in alliances of varying success among Cadogan House, the other vampire houses, and the local shape-shifter packs and magic-wielders, trying to figure out whodunit, as another conflict develops from the machinations of the local criminal mastermind and his supernatural empire, the Circle. Series fans will be delighted by developments in Ethan and Merit's romance and impressed by Neill's willingness to take some narrative risks. Agent: Lucienne Diver, Knight Agency. (Mar.)\n

About the Author
Chloe Neill, author of the Chicagoland Vampires novels (Dark Debt, Blood Games, Wild Things), the Dark Elite novels (Charmfall, Hexbound, Firespell), and the Devil’s Isle novels (The Veil), was born and raised in the South but now makes her home in the Midwest—just close enough to Cadogan House, St. Sophia’s, and Devil’s Isle to keep an eye on things. When not transcribing Merit’s, Lily’s, and Claire’s adventures, she bakes, works, and scours the Internet for good recipes and great graphic design. Chloe also maintains her sanity by spending time with her boys—her favorite landscape photographer (her husband) and their dogs, Baxter and Scout. (Both she and the photographer understand the dogs are in charge.)

Happy one-year vamp birthday, Merit!
By RabidReads
The CHICAGOLAND VAMPIRES series is twelve installments deep, so it’s kinda crazy that Merit is only now celebrating her one-year vampire anniversary, but there you have it! It’s been a heck of a journey thus far, and Chloe Neill wrote the ideal story to honour such a momentous occasion. The latest antagonist is at it again, all of the beloved characters get their due, and I just loved the ending. The action and romance were in perfect harmony, and there were so many little things that made me smile that reading over my notes in preparation of drafting my review made me doubly appreciative.

I liked how the author brought a thread that I hadn’t even really thought about since book 1 to the fore; it was such a fitting choice given where we’re at in this universe’s timeline, and answered a whole whack of questions that I’d figured would remain mysteries. The House called in Paige’s help for this particular riddle which made me happy, and just when I thought that Neill had covered the spectrum of supernaturals she brings in a necromancer! I’m unsure if Annabelle will be added to the list of rotating secondaries, but I hope so because she was quite interesting (and useful).

The Chicago flavour that’s injected into every novel is something that I always look forward to, and in this addition instead of familiarizing fans with another hole-in-the-wall food joint, we got a little history lesson on Belle River. I’m not sure how much of it was fact/fiction, and my internet research didn’t pan out, nevertheless it was thought-provoking. The humour was as good as ever with Merit-isms like “alphapology” and despite the absence of a local dish to add to my wishlist, the heroine made sure to bring a battle snack. Merit & Ethan fulfilled a fantasy of mine too—they did it in the Cadogan library!

[SPOILER ALERT]

There was one important slip that spoiled the anonymity of the big bad way earlier I would have preferred, and that was his/her name. The villain basically had a flashing sign over their head with an arrow pointing to them that said “I did it”. It’s like naming a character Luna, and not expecting readers to guess that that character is a werewolf. So, that took some of the thrill out of it for me because half the fun is trying to guess who the wrongdoer is. And, of course this person somehow managed to thwart the legal system, and fly the coop which means we’ll definitely be seeing them again.

The training wheels came off in MIDNIGHT MARKED. Happy one-year vamp birthday, Merit!

Colossal bombs make for great moments of jealousy and romance
By Tanya Davis
The Chicagoland Vampires series has been one of my favorites for quite some time. It’s hard to believe that in their world it’s only been a year. They’ve been through so much. The characters have all grown and changed through all their trials.
Midnight Mark’s enemy kind of rolls over from Dark Debt. They definitely have more tricks up their sleeves to bring down Cadogan house and the city’s vampires in general. I noticed a much more intense, protective side of Ethan. He’s always been protective of Merit, but I thought he was on the edge of losing it a few times. As usual, this protectiveness brings trouble between the couple. It is nice to see a couple that grow throughout the series instead of just getting an HEA with no more problems. Ethan and Merit go through all the growing pains a normal couple would go through.
It was funny to see Mallory and Catcher in their new roles. It seems like they, too, are going through normal couple stuff. Very down to earth and fun. But I love that this couple also knows how to work together. Like they have one brain and just know what the other is going to do. They play a big part in Midnight Marked. Mallory and Catcher are an awesome couple. I’ve always loved them together.
Merit comes face to face with an enemy of old. It was really a struggle to see if her new vulnerability was going to be her downfall in their confrontation. I couldn’t believe that this person was still actually around. I loved how Merit was able to turn everything into a great positive for the vampires.
We see a bit of different magic in this book, so it is everyone on deck to decipher just what the team is dealing with. I loved the puzzle and how it was all put together. I don’t know why I didn’t see it coming, but our enemy brings on a surprise. I still can’t believe I didn’t see that coming.
So, the ending. Let’s just say I did get a bit weepy and mushy. It was romantic, and unexpected. I had totally forgotten about this thing between Merit and Ethan. I’m such a sucker for a bit of romance. I feel like in Urban Fantasy, the special “moments” are few, so it was really great to see this one.
We have a lot of things left in the air, and I think we only have one more book to do it in. A year is going to be a darn hard wait to see how this is all put together. The book is probably going to have to be a good 1000 pages! No wonder we have to wait so long!
Overall, I thought this was a really good addition to the series. We had mystery, suspense with some good relationship issues. There was also the need to bring all the supernatural beings together, so we got to see the werewolves and RG as well. It was an all hands on deck. Definitely a fun read!

I was thinking harder than Ethan and Merit
By Kathy Davie
Twelfth in the Chicagoland Vampires urban fantasy series based in Chicago with a strong Young Adult flavor and revolving around Merit, the House Sentinel.

My Take
It's a good read with action and some minor betrayals. The story conflict certainly had my brain goin' tryin' to figure out what was happening. Gabe's prophecy about Merit and Ethan having a child pops up now and again. Of course, the ending does make this even more likely *grin*

Now this could make me consider turning vampire, lol: "if I wasn't pumping my body with trans fats, I wasn't fully utilizing my immortality".

I can understand Gabe's position about protecting his Pack, but I do not understand how telling Ethan what he learned about the Circle would threaten the Pack. Yet more stupid was Ethan and Merit not guessing who Reed's accomplice was. Mallory's snark at the end was well justified, lol.

Ethan doesn't ring true in this, partly because Neill doesn't do enough to show us that he's panicking over Merit and the attention on her from Reed. As for that encounter in Botanic Park, I would say it's a case of entrapment with Reed so prepared. And if the cops were surrounding them, they must have seen the truth…??

Ooh, baby, Merit rips the Red Guard a new one for picking and choosing their battles. For avoiding anything messy.

The Story
Merit is one of Chicago's most skilled vampire warriors; these days, she doesn't scare easily. But she and Master vampire Ethan have made a new and powerful enemy, and he won't give up until he owns the Windy City.

With his last plan thwarted, he's more determined than ever to watch Cadogan burn. Ethan has put the House's vampires on high alert, but their enemy will stop at nothing, including pitting vampire against vampire…

The Red Guard is…
…a secret vampire corps that oversees the vampire Masters. And they're ticked off at Merit. Jonah, Guard captain of Grey House, is also a Red Guard and Merit's partner…and in love with Merit. Horace had been in the Civil War.

The Office of the Ombudsman is…
…a department within the Chicago PD and acts as the liaison between the police and the supernatural community. Chuck Merit is Merit's grandfather and the ombudsman. Jeff Christopher is a tiger shifter and the techno brains in the office. Catcher Bell also works for Chuck and is married to fellow sorcerer, Mallory Carmichael Bell, Merit's best friend for years. Detective Arthur Jacobs is also against Reed. Jennifer Jacobs is a lawyer and Arthur's unhappy daughter. Her brother, Brett, had been targeted by a serial killer.

Joshua Merit is Merit's father, a powerful real estate developer who owns Merit Properties, with an issue with Reed. Meredith is her passive-aggressive mother. Robert, Merit's brother, is being groomed to take over the family business and quite the stuffed shirt. He despises Merit. Charlotte is Merit's other sibling. The twins, Elisa and Annika, and Berit had been Ethan's sisters back in the day in Sweden.

The North American Central Pack are…
…shifters with a base in Chicago. They are also allied with Cadogan House. Gabriel Keene is the Apex, the Alpha, of the Pack. Tanya is his wife. Connor is their son. Logan Hill is the vampire who's gone Rogue from McDonald House in Boston for not being a team player and insubordination. Will McDonald is their House Master.

Hailey Elizabeth Stanton is three-and-a-half. Nick Breckenridge is a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist and Merit family friend.

The Cover and Title
The cover is a soft range of blues and greens with Merit dressed in jeans and knee-high boots and a deep purple tank top, her katana in hand. She stands with a hip cocked and head down, appearing to look over the side of the old, wood-planked bridge she's on, the lit city of Chicago in the background.

The title is when the trap is set, for it's Midnight Marked that all sups must fear.
