Y de repente, Teresa (Spanish Edition), by Jesus Sanchez Adalid

During the reign of Philip II, the Inquisition tries boldly to control Spanish society. No one is above suspicion. Don Rodrigo de Castro is a ruthless, ambitious, and cautious Inquisitor who has appointed two commissioners with special and secret powers.

For a history buff this is great stuff!

Y de repente, Teresa (And Suddenly Teresa, but this title has not yet been translated into English as far as I know) is a novel about a popular Catholic saint known as Teresa de Jesus who lived in Spain in the mid-1500s, and how she narrowly escaped being burned at the stake by the Spanish Inquisition. Ironically, Teresa de Jesus doesn’t make her appearance until the latter third of the book because the greater part of it unveils the Spanish Inquisition to the reader through the men who directed it, and how it actually worked in the Iberian Peninsula. For a history buff, this is nifty stuff! (See Spanish version of this review below).

Sanchez tells his story in a clear and unassuming manner. The first half of the book shows how high level clerics of the Inquisition, a bureau of the Catholic Church, wrestled with a heresy known as alumbradismo, adherents considered alumbradas, or the illuminated ones, mostly women including nuns. The reader thus becomes acquainted with fascinating details pertaining to, apparently well-known, alumbradas punished by the Inquisition at that time. Sanchez believes that alumbradismo was linked to Spain’s vain glorious attempts to squash the rise of Protestantism in Europe.

Teresa de Jesus was thought to be an alumbrada by certain clerics driven by their trenchant sexism, their hunger for power, and their false religious zeal. She was saved from burning by opposing clergy who believed she was a genuine saint. This is the first time I read about the interplay between “hawks” vs. “doves” inside the Inquisition but it makes sense too.

In a captivating afterword, Sanchez analyzes Teresa de Jesus’s writings (which got her into hot water in the first place) and deems her one of the most outspoken women’s rights thinkers, certainly the earliest to my knowledge—more so than the famous Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz, a Mexican nun-scholar-poet who lived about a hundred years later and also ran into trouble with the church. [April 2015]
