About the Author
Dr. Mark Krause received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Central Washington University, and his PhD at the University of Tennessee in 2000. He completed a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Texas at Austin where he studied classical conditioning of sexual behavior in birds. Following this, Krause accepted a research fellowship through the National Institute of Aging to conduct research on cognitive neuroscience at Oregon Health and Sciences University. He has conducted research and published on pointing and communication in chimpanzees, predatory behavior in snakes, the behavioral and evolutionary basis of conditioned sexual behavior, and the influence of testosterone on cognition and brain function. Krause began his teaching career as a doctoral candidate and continued to pursue this passion even during research appointments. His teaching includes courses in general psychology, learning and memory, and behavioral neuroscience. Krause is currently a professor of psychology at Southern Oregon University, where his focus is on teaching, writing, and supervising student research. His spare time is spent with his family, cycling, reading, and enjoying Oregon’s outdoors.

Dr. Daniel Corts discovered psychology at Belmont University where he received his B.S. He completed a PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Tennessee in 1999 and then a post-doctoral position at Furman University for one year where he focused on the teaching of psychology. He is now professor of psychology at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL where he has taught for over 15 years. His research interests in cognition have lead to publications on language, gesture, and memory, and he has also published in the area of college student development. Corts is increasingly involved in applied work, developing programming and assessments related to k-12 educational programming and teacher preparation. Corts is enthusiastic about getting students involved in research and has supervised or coauthored over 100 conference presentations with undergraduates. Corts has served as the local Psi Chi advisor for a dozen years and has served on the Board of Directors for several years, including his current term as President. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his two children, traveling, camping, and cooking.

About the Author
Andrew Norman began researching the HMS Hood after attending an annual memorial service for victims of the sinking. His previous books include a study of the lost English village of Tyneham and a recently completed biography of T. E. Lawrence. He lives in Dorset, England.

Welcome addition

This is a short book, and by no means a history of the ship in question. If you are new to the subject, you would be better served getting a copy of "Flagship Hood" by Ted Briggs etal. The book is in two sections "Life of the ship" and "Death of the Ship". This first section though interesting to me is disjointed and does not add much to the overall understanding of the Hood and its role in the history of the RN. Any of the stories are short and lack Closure.
The section regarding Holland Tactics is well explained and illustrated. The theories regarding the destruction of the ship are well articulate and the pros and cons of each described. I shall not describe the "new" theory but it was one that I remember discussing with my father (ex RN) many years ago, (I should have written the book hey!), it is certainly compelling and if true would debunk a lot of the hackneyed observations regarding the Hood and its role in the Bismarck action. The disappointing aspect is although the wreck was discovered before publication, no findings appear to have been incorporated in this volume (sounds like a justification for a 2nd edition). Overall though a welcome addition to my library.

HMS Hood: Pride of the Royal Navy

Norman's book begins with a fundamental mistake on its very first page, a description of the Hood's adversary, the Bismarck, as a "pocket battleship" (an error also found in Ian Kershaw's otherwise estimable biography of Hitler). This was a term applied only to the first three warships Germany built after the First World War, the Deutschland (later Lützow) the Admiral Scheer and the Admiral Graf Spee, which by treaty were limited to 10,000 tons. The Bismarck was a full battleship (over 50,000 tons fully loaded) and, at the time of her launching in 1939, the largest in the world.
The problem with any biography of the Hood (Edwin Hoyt's poorly written "The Life and Death of the HMS Hood" is a similar example) is that for the first 19 of her 20 years of existence she led a relatively uneventful career, so the first part of Norman's book tends toward the anecdotal (the ship's pets, some of her more colorful characters, etc.), while the latter part simply rehashes material better stated elsewhere. Norman's theories concerning Admiral Holland's tactics and the Hood's final explosion tend toward the far-fetched and don't really add anything to the scholarship of this subject. He would have done better to consult Robert Winklareth's "The Bismarck Chase," which, while it contains errors of its own, at least explores in detail issues of naval gunnery with some degree of knowledge. Kennedy's "Pursuit" and Müllenheim-Rechberg's "Battleship Bismarck" still remain the preferred and most accurate sources.

Hoodwinked

The author's potential contribution to the study of HMS Hood lay in recording the memories of her crewmen. Surprisingly though, the "recollections" section takes up a mere 40 pages--published separately as a booklet, this might have been worth a modest price. Here I will discuss the remaining 100+ pages with their focus on technical/historical material: warship design, naval combat, and battle history, none of which Norman understands. From a vast list of errors, I have selected a few representative examples.
NORMAN on warship design: Regarding deck protection, "Hood's armor was not plate, but of the cemented type...." This is pure gibberish. Hood did have British C armor ("C" for "cemented") in thicknesses up to 15-inch, but not on her decks, which instead had lesser steel with no individual plate more than about 2-inch. No mere detail, this bears directly on the cause of Hood's loss, and the author cannot even correctly parrot the fundamentals.
NORMAN on battle history: "Most, if not all [of Bismarck's shells], failed to explode or did so only partially." In reality, German shells indeed underachieved, but it was Prinz Eugen's ammunition that gave a demonstrably poor performance, not Bismarck's. Norman says that, if Bismarck hit Hood with a shell, "chances were that it had not exploded"--opening the door for his theory that Eugen fired the fatal shell. Norman's theory depends on ignorance of the basic facts.
NORMAN on naval combat: When sunk, Hood was "well within" her immune zone, "defined as a range no closer than 12,000 yards, and the outer limit beyond 25,000 to 30,000 yards." The concept of an immune zone--the area where both the belt armor and the deck armor are likely to resist the armor-piercing shells--did not apply in this instance for the simple reason that Hood had no immune zone. Quite the contrary, through much of Norman's specified zone, neither Hood's belt nor her deck would suffice to keep out Bismarck's shells. She was doubly vulnerable! But Norman again is steering us toward his Eugen theory, puzzling though it is--if Hood was immune to Bismarck's 800kg armor-piercing shells, what could Eugen achieve with shells that were 122kg and not armor-piercing? Norman claims Eugen's shells could by-pass Hood's armor, plummeting straight down Hood's funnel, though he offers no explanation how the shells could achieve the great heights necessary for this trajectory. In fact, Eugen's shells were descending from an angle only about 20 degrees above the horizontal; so unless the Germans managed a bank shot off a low-flying billiards table, this theorized hit was physically impossible.
Given the availability of many fine books on Hood and Denmark Strait, this one earns little regard. The final word on Norman's research appears on page 82 with a photo captioned "Hood at speed"--a dramatic photo which, unfortunately, depicts the battleship Royal Oak, a ship four years older than Hood and from an entirely different class.

Great for for newbies but consider a pocket dictionary

My wife and I recently returned to France with this new edition as well as with her 8-year old edition, which was one two many. Either is equally useful to look up a word or phrase, so buy the older edition, which is much cheaper. However, if you want to try to read local newspapers or otherwise learn the culture, the vocabulary in "French at a Glance" is much too limited. You need to carry a pocket dictionary. I especially like the Larousse, which is fully bilingual with 80 thousand translations.

A Short, Entertaining but Engaging Read

I didn't read the story in order. This one caught my interest with the hell hound with a unique twist that I immediately chose to read it first. This author is very promising :) If you want something short, quick-paced and engaging, then this book is for you. I highly recommend it to readers who are looking for new authors to read. It's light, easy and engaging, secondary characters are very likable and from the previous book. I'm off to read her other two books...

Dog steals the story

The dog steals the love story - which makes sense since the dog is the main title. The story itself has one very short sex scene, mostly closed door. Everyone bonds a little too quickly, but the nature of short stories demands this. I think the story would have been better with a little more scene description and emotional build up; in other words, for this story would have been better as a novelette instead of a short story but covering the same ground. Again - love the dog. I had fun reading the scenes with him.

It's a fun read and while I already loved the characters from the first book in the series, Sucking in San Francisco, Hell Hounds can stand alone and is a humorous, sexy paranormal romance novella. If you enjoy the books of Marta Acosta or HP Mallory, you'll love Jessica McBrayer's Vampires of SF series!

Great for understanding how and why our ancestors came to Colonial America

My ancestor John Alston was apparently involved in the Monmouth Rebellion in England in 1685 as a teenager, then sold into slavery by the British after the execution of Monmouth, then sent to Barbadoes. He was freed by the authorities there, then came to North Carolina where he became the patriarch of a large group of prominent Alston descendants. His family were apparently Puritans or Quakers, and his probable grandfather Peter Alston is mentioned in letters by John Winthrope of the Massachusetts Colony, who came to America from Suffolk, where the Alstons lived. John Alston is mentioned is one of the sober and pious rebels freed, and his ship is listed. Great research, great book.

It's an epic tale of one young girl, fostered to the house of Lady Merin in the hopes of one day becoming a warrior. Tamras may be young and innocent, but she knows what she wants and is determined to walk the path that she feels is best and not the path others would force upon her.

The books not only follows along as Tamras finds her path in the warriors world, we also get to see her discover the depth and strength of her heart and spirit and discover where she fits in in the world. I really like that Catherine has built a world of strong women, yet hasn't fallen into the trap of making the men weak, of body or mind.

I downloaded the first book from Catherine's website and immediately started reading. It didn't take long before I was fully invested in Tamras and where her journey would take her. That was two days ago. When I finished reading it, I immediately purchased books two and three and jumped right in. Needless to say, nothing else got accomplished around here, I blame Catherine for writing such great books. (I should be blaming my own lack of self control and poor time management skills, but where's the fun in that!).

When I finished the third book last night, I didn't immediately write my thoughts down, instead heading to bed with the intention of allowing the story to pecolate through my mind. I should know by now to have a pen and paper next to the bed, as I thought of several amazing, witty, astonishingly insightful things to write. Alas, I awoke this morning and they've all fled my brain. All I can say is I highly recommend the books. Catherine is kind (smart) enough to offer the first book for only a 99 cent download, so you have nothing to loose by giving it a go. If you're anything like me, when you get to the end of it, you'll almost be tripping over yourself to get back online and purchase the next two.

The trilogy, When Women Were Warriors is written by Catherine M. Wilson. The main character, Tamras, daughter of Tamnet, amuses and challenges the reader as she learns how to develop deep friendships, face fierce battles and betrayal and grow into wisdom. Tamras has only lived in a land where women govern. When she leaves her mother's farm and lands, her adventures and misadventures at the House of Merin, a training camp for warriors begins.

In Book I of Tamras is presented to the House of Merin in hopes that she too may earn her shield. Queen Merin is the shield mate of Tamnet and Tamras hopes that like her mother, one day she too may earn her shield. Throughout the first book she learns the tasks of being a companion to a warrior and struggles with the hope and dread of becoming an apprentice. Find out what happens when tenderness becomes passionate? On the back cover Ginth is quoted, "Make sure of what you want, and when you get it, don't complain."

Book II continues the journey as Tamras learns the meaning of risk and love. What does it mean to face truths that hurt? Should one risk betrayal or betray the one they are bound to? It is a trilogy so three books to read. Amazing love story for the girls who love girls. Think Zena meets Gabriel and does everything you want them to do.Well maybe not everything but more than they did in the TV series. Could not put it down even on the second read through.Go girls.
